Moisés Caicedo's Injury Setback for Chelsea vs Arsenal

Moisés Caicedo was nowhere to be seen when the Chelsea teamsheet dropped for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6 – a significant setback for Xabi Alonso on a day when he needed all the control he could find in midfield.

The Ecuador international had only just worked his way back from injury. He was a surprise absentee from Chelsea's opener against Fulham, with Alonso revealing that the midfielder had suffered what he called a “minor setback.” That knock also kept him out of the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town, a tie Chelsea navigated without their record signing at the base of midfield.

Caicedo finally returned to action against Brighton last weekend, but the comeback never really got going. Sent on as a second-half substitute, he lasted only 14 minutes before he had to be withdrawn, prompting fresh concern on the Chelsea bench. Alonso later admitted the problem “wasn't something new,” a clear hint that the issue had been lingering rather than a fresh blow.

Even so, there was late hope he might make it for Arsenal. The medical team pushed, the player tried, and Alonso kept the door open. In the end, caution won.

“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso told Sky Sports before kickoff, explaining why Caicedo had not been included in the squad.

So Chelsea went into a major London showdown without their key midfield enforcer, choosing the long view over the temptation of a short-term gamble. The next few weeks will show whether that restraint pays off in a season where every point, and every player, already feels vital.
