Palmer's Withdrawal Opens Door for Gibbs-White
England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged on Friday that Gibbs-White had been close to making the squad initially. The 26-year-old midfielder is now likely to take the place of the Chelsea forward Palmer, who is 24 years old.
Palmer had been recalled by Tuchel following his controversial omission from England's World Cup squad. Tuchel mentioned that Palmer needed to prove himself and justify his spot on the team. Despite this, Palmer will miss the international break where England are scheduled to play four matches.

Palmer's Recent Form and Injury

After missing the World Cup selection and taking a summer break, Palmer has started six out of seven games for Chelsea this season, completing 90 minutes in five games, scoring four goals, and providing two assists.
He has struggled with a recurring groin injury during the 2025-26 season. Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now leading Manchester City, commented that the situation was puzzling. Palmer last appeared for England in a friendly 1-0 defeat against Japan in March.

Gibbs-White’s most recent cap for England came in a 3-0 friendly victory over Wales in October 2025. This season, he has contributed one goal and two assists in five league appearances for Nottingham Forest.
