Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep one of their crown jewels at the Bernabeu.

The Brazilian forward, 26, was drifting towards the final year of his contract, a dangerous zone for any club, let alone Madrid. With 12 months left on his deal, he was on course to be able to walk away for nothing next summer. Arsenal, fresh from a Premier League title and hunting for a world-class winger, watched the situation closely as talks dragged on.

The move never came. Instead, earlier this month Vinicius signed a six-year contract, tying his prime years to Madrid. Behind the scenes, Mourinho – back at Real for a second spell, confirmed in June – played his part.

On Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old cut through the noise and explained exactly what he told the Brazil international.

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said. Then he relayed the conversation that helped close the door on any exit.

“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

No tactical board. No long presentation. Just a challenge and a warning rolled into one.

For Mourinho, the decision was also rooted in what Vinicius has felt inside the dressing room since his return.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he said, pointing to a squad that, in his view, is building something strong enough to convince a global star to stay.

This is not the first time Mourinho and Vinicius have found themselves linked by a tense storyline. Last season, while Mourinho was in charge of Benfica, he faced Real three times in the Champions League. Their second clash, the first leg of a knockout phase play-off, was overshadowed by controversy.

During that match, Real players alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius, prompting the game to be halted for around eight minutes. Prestianni denied the accusations. Mourinho, in the heat of the night, stood squarely behind his own player.

Uefa later investigated and banned Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, but for homophobic conduct, not racism.

Mourinho has now revisited that flashpoint, making clear where he stands today and how that relates to his relationship with Vinicius.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said, underlining the loyalty that has defined much of his managerial career.

The twist comes in what followed.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side.”

From touchline adversary to guardian of one of Madrid’s most important players, Mourinho has planted his flag. Vinicius, locked into a six-year deal, will now live out his prime under a coach who told him, in no uncertain terms, that walking away from Real Madrid simply “is not worth it.”
