Jose Mourinho Criticizes Refereeing with Printed Images After Real Madrid Derby Loss
Jose Mourinho, the manager of Real Madrid, expressed frustration following his team’s 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in a LaLiga derby. Mourinho publicly protested several refereeing decisions, displaying printed images of key moments he believed were wrongly judged.
The defeat puts Real Madrid six points behind league leaders Barcelona, intensifying pressure on Mourinho after an earlier 1-0 loss to Real Betis this month.
Mourinho Highlights Controversial Red Card Incidents
Using printed screenshots, Mourinho pointed to two instances from the first half where he argued Atletico players should have been sent off. He stated these were "two clear red cards," and suggested that playing against nine men instead of eleven could have changed the match's outcome dramatically.
"We can skip the press conference because the story of the match is right here," Mourinho said while showing the images. "Given the difficulties we faced afterwards playing 11 against 10, we can only imagine what 50 minutes of 11 against nine would have been like."
Despite his disappointment, Mourinho praised his players’ effort and character, especially their first-half performance which set them up well for the second half.
"I'll just have to limit myself to hugging my players, who gave it their all and played a first half, showed great class and character," Mourinho added.
Belief in Mistakes and Team Spirit
Mourinho expressed hope that the controversial calls were unintentional errors by the officials rather than deliberate bias.
"I want to believe they are simply mistakes, just as a coach makes mistakes, just as a player makes mistakes," he explained. "I liked my team as a unit. Even in the first half, I really liked them, and in the second half it was obviously very difficult to get the ball and to stop Atleti's possession. I liked their pride, I liked their determination, and it's a good feeling for me to not be disappointed in my players."
Diego Simeone Responds to Mourinho’s Comments
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone avoided escalating tensions, urging respect among coaches and officials alike.
"We are in a privileged position with a lot of public scrutiny as coaches," Simeone said. "Whether it’s Mourinho, [Hansi] Flick, [Manuel] Pellegrini, me, or anyone else, we need to be careful about what we say. We have to know how to respect others, the referees, our colleagues and we all lose out. When someone crosses that line of respect, it’s not right - you can’t cross that line."
