Napoli Faces Injury Crisis After Arsenal Defeat

Napoli’s Champions League opener against Arsenal took more than three points off the table. It stripped them of their goalkeeper, one of their brightest attackers, and left a growing injury list under an unforgiving spotlight.

A tight, tense night at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was decided in the 75th minute by Martin Odegaard, whose strike sealed a 1-0 win for Arsenal on Wednesday. The result hurt. The collateral damage hurt more.

Double blow: Meret and Alisson ruled out

Midway through the game, Napoli saw first-choice goalkeeper Alex Meret and attacker Alisson Santos forced off, turning a difficult European night into an outright problem for the weeks ahead.

On Thursday, the club confirmed the extent of the damage. Meret has sustained a low-grade injury to the adductor in his left thigh. Alisson has suffered a medium-grade hamstring injury.

No precise return dates have been set. The medical staff will monitor both players over the coming days, but the message is clear: Napoli must brace for at least a short spell without them.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the internal hope is that the worst of this injury wave will ease by the end of the September-October international break. That timeline now looms large over the club’s early-season plans.

Anguissa back in the frame

There was one sliver of good news. Napoli also announced that Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is back in full training and in contention to feature at the weekend.

For a side suddenly stripped of key figures in both boxes, the return of a midfield pillar could not be better timed. Anguissa’s presence offers balance, control, and a bit of steel in front of a defence already stretched by absences.

McTominay and others still on the mend

The list of unavailable players remains significant.

Scott McTominay, the 2024-25 Serie A MVP and a central figure in this Napoli project, is still recovering after a minor heart procedure to treat a benign arrhythmia. The club expects him to rejoin the squad after the upcoming international break, a target date that now feels crucial given the latest setbacks.

At the back, defenders Alessandro Buongiorno and Luca Marianucci are also working their way back from recent injuries. Up front, forward Giovane remains sidelined as well. All three are aiming for a return in October, a month that is rapidly becoming a pivot point for Napoli’s season.

For now, the picture is stark: a Champions League campaign that began with a narrow defeat has quickly turned into a test of depth, resilience, and nerve. How long can Napoli hold their line before the cavalry returns in October?
