Netherlands Edge Serbia 2-1 in Nations League Thanks to Zirkzee and Koopmeiners

The Netherlands held onto their unbeaten streak in the Nations League with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Serbia in Eindhoven. Teun Koopmeiners and Joshua Zirkzee scored for the Oranje, overcoming an early equalizer from Mihajlo Cvetkovic.

In a game marked by tactical shifts, the Dutch side controlled possession at 65%, yet Serbia’s direct approach kept them under pressure. Koopmeiners opened scoring in the 31st minute with a well-timed run, but Serbia quickly leveled through Cvetkovic off a cross by Aleksa Terzic just four minutes later.

The second half saw a turning point when Zirkzee came on at halftime. His presence as a striker gave the Dutch attack the focus it needed, and he secured the winning goal in the 72nd minute after receiving a pass from Tijjani Reijnders. Despite Serbia firing 15 shots late on, the Dutch defense stood firm, moving to eight points alongside Greece atop Nations League A Group 2.

Goalkeeper & Defence

  • Bart Verbruggen - 7/10: Made four important saves, showing reliability though unable to prevent the Cvetkovic goal. His distribution helped bypass Serbia's press.
  • Virgil van Dijk - 8/10: Celebrated his 100th cap with a commanding display, organizing the defense and keeping the line tight under Serbian counterattacks.
  • Denzel Dumfries - 6/10: Provided width and energy on the right but lacked his usual precision in delivery. Crucial recovery runs helped cover Serbian threats.
  • Micky van de Ven - 7/10: Used his speed effectively to cover the high defensive line, making key interceptions and stepping into midfield when needed.

Midfield

  • Teun Koopmeiners - 8/10: Showed excellent timing and spatial awareness to open the scoring, linking defense and attack smoothly throughout the first half.
  • Tijjani Reijnders - 8/10: The creative force behind the team, his vertical passes and energy fueled the transitions, assisting the decisive goal.
  • Ryan Gravenberch - 6/10: Maintained possession and rhythm but was replaced before the hour as the coach sought more attacking thrust.
  • Joey Veerman - 6/10: Played neatly but struggled to break through a packed Serbian midfield, eventually subbed in the 59th minute.

Attack

  • Noa Lang - 5/10: Had difficulty creating chances or impacting play against Serbia’s organized defense and was withdrawn early.
  • Mexx Meerdink - 5/10: Struggled as a focal point upfront and was replaced at halftime for a more physical option.
  • Crysencio Summerville - 6/10: Displayed moments of skill and pace, troubling the Serbian full-backs though inconsistent in decision-making.

Substitutes & Manager

  • Joshua Zirkzee - 9/10: Entered at halftime and changed the game with intelligent movement and composure, scoring the match-winning goal.
  • Ruben van Bommel - 6/10: Brought fresh energy on the flank after replacing Lang, stretching Serbia’s defense in the final stages.
  • Jorrel Hato - 6/10: Helped strengthen the left side of defense during the closing minutes to protect the lead.
  • Gjivai Zechiel - 6/10: Added discipline and helped shut down Serbia’s late attempts through tight marking.
  • Quinten Timber - N/A: Came on late to see out the remaining minutes.
  • Xavi Hernandez - 8/10: Showed tactical insight by introducing Zirkzee at halftime and making multiple changes that regained control when the match began to slip away.
