Neuer Sits Out Cup Final as World Cup Target Looms

Manuel Neuer will watch the DFB Cup final from the sidelines. The risk, even a small one, is one step too far.

According to Sky, the 40-year-old’s recovery is on track, but with the World Cup on the horizon and the German No. 1 shirt effectively waiting for him, he has decided not to gamble. The decision is precautionary, but it is also definitive: no cup final, no last-minute heroics.

In his place, Jonas Urbig steps into the spotlight again. The 22-year-old, usually the quiet understudy, now walks into his 20th appearance of the season – and the biggest game of his career so far. This is not just another rotation start; this is a final, under the lights, with a trophy on the line.

Head coach Vincent Kompany has also named Sven Ulreich and Jannis Bärtl in his squad, but it is Urbig who gets the gloves, the pressure and the chance.

Neuer’s body has been a recurring storyline this season. Muscle-fibre tears kept him out in December, February and March. Last Saturday, in the 5–1 win over 1. FC Köln on the final Bundesliga matchday, he left the pitch with calf problems, substituted as a precaution. One more warning sign, one more reminder that time and mileage catch up with everyone, even Neuer.

The twist is that, just a day before that league finale, he had put pen to paper on a new deal, extending his expiring contract until 2027. The club clearly still sees him as the anchor, the reference point, the standard.

National team coach Julian Nagelsmann underlined that faith on Thursday, naming Neuer in the squad for the North American World Cup. The DFB side will gather in Herzogenaurach on Wednesday to begin preparations, and Neuer is expected to be there, working his way back toward full sharpness.

Sporting director Max Eberl made the situation plain when speaking to Bild: “The World Cup isn't in jeopardy, but he can't play tomorrow,” he said. “It's simply too soon after Saturday's injury. There's no point risking further damage by starting him in the cup final. We made this decision together, even if it was tough for Manu to miss the final.”

So the final goes ahead without the veteran who has defined a generation of German goalkeeping. Urbig gets his audition on the big stage. Neuer, for once, has to wait – with the World Cup, and the No. 1 jersey, still firmly in his sights.
