Neymar’s Synthetic Turf Standoff at Allianz Parque

Santos head coach Cuca has made one thing clear: the decision on Neymar’s involvement at Allianz Parque will not be his alone.

The coach, wary of the forward’s long-running issues with artificial pitches, underlined that any call on his star’s availability would be shared across the club’s technical staff. Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Cuca laid out the process rather than a verdict.

"I will talk to him and we will make our decisions. With him and the entire squad. We'll determine what is best to do," he said, framing Neymar not as an untouchable figure, but as part of a collective decision-making process.

The caution is rooted in history. Neymar’s relationship with synthetic turf is openly hostile. After aggravating an ankle problem against Atletico Mineiro last year, he went straight to social media and did not bother to sugarcoat his view: "It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***."

That frustration has not faded.

As questions circled again this week about a possible appearance on Palmeiras’ artificial surface, Neymar bristled in the mixed zone. The focus, he insisted, was being dragged too far ahead.

"Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday. I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf]," he replied, pushing back against the idea that his availability at Allianz Parque was a foregone conclusion.

His stance is consistent. Neymar has long singled out the venue as a personal no-go zone.

"Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible. Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries," he has said previously, drawing a sharp contrast with another São Paulo ground. "Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch."

So the dilemma is set. Cuca wants a collective, carefully weighed decision. Neymar wants no part of synthetic turf. Allianz Parque offers exactly that.

Something will have to give.
