Nicolo Tresoldi to Delay National Team Choice Between Germany and Italy Until After 2027 U21 Euros
Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi has decided to hold off on choosing between representing Germany or Italy at the senior international level until after the 2027 U21 European Championship. The 22-year-old striker, currently playing for the German U21 team, is caught between his birthplace and the country where he developed much of his football skills.
A Heart Divided
The battle for Tresoldi's allegiance will continue for some time. Despite strong interest from both the German Football Association (DFB) and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the young forward plans to see through the German U21 campaign before making a final decision. In an interview with Sky Germany, Tresoldi opened up about how tough the choice is. "My heart is 50:50. Both countries mean a lot to me," he said, emphasizing the emotional challenge behind his split loyalties.
Talks with Jurgen Klopp
The situation grew more intense when Jurgen Klopp, head coach of the German national team, personally reached out to Tresoldi. Having impressed on the Champions League stage, the striker had detailed talks with Klopp regarding his future. Tresoldi praised Klopp's understanding nature, describing their conversation as more father-son than typical coach-player. He added, "The door is always open for me," reflecting the warmth in their exchange.
Roberto Mancini's Appeal for Italy
Italy’s new head coach, Roberto Mancini, has also made his move to bring Tresoldi back to his roots. The forward confirmed he gave Mancini the same honest response he gave Klopp. Born in Sardinia and spending his early years in Italy before moving to Germany at 13, Tresoldi’s bond with Italy runs deep. He also qualifies for Argentina through his mother, but his current focus remains on Europe. "It’s not just that my father is from Italy. I was born there, I grew up there," he explained.
Commitment to Germany U21 for Now
At present, Tresoldi is fully engaged with the German U21 team under coach Antonio Di Salvo. He expressed pride in wearing the German jersey and a strong desire to compete in the upcoming European Championship. His decision to wait until after the 2027 tournament sets a clear timeline for resolving his international future. Tresoldi is expected to feature this Saturday as Germany U21 faces Latvia U21 in a crucial qualifier, giving the squad a valuable boost.
"I wear the Germany jersey with pride, I’m very happy to be here. I still want to play in the European Championship here. After that, we will see how things progress," Tresoldi said.
