Noah Okafor Returns to Leeds United with Determination

Noah Okafor did not look like a man easing his way into pre-season.

The Leeds United forward stepped off the bench against Manchester United on Wednesday and, for the first time this summer, felt grass under his boots in club colours again after a long, emotional break.

“Amazing to be back with the team on the pitch,” he said, the relief obvious.

The Switzerland international only returned to training last week, his summer extended by his country’s run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The irony? While Switzerland went deep into the tournament, Okafor barely featured. Just 19 minutes, all as a substitute. For a player coming off what he calls an “amazing season” with Leeds, it stung.

“The World Cup was not so good for me because I didn't play so much,” he told BBC Radio Leeds. “The coach didn't let me play, I don't know why because I did really great. I came with a lot of confidence, I did an amazing season but in the end he just decides like this.”

No excuses. No sulking. He has parked it.

“Now I keep it to the side, just focus on Leeds,” he said. “Give every day 100% in training and this season help the team again like last season.”

Against Manchester United, Okafor’s cameo was brief but important. It was a reset. A reminder of what he is here to do.

“That's the game I play, the game I used to play,” he said of his performance. “I need a few more days to work on my fitness... then when it starts I am ready.”

Last season, he delivered eight goals and one assist in 28 Premier League appearances. Solid numbers for a player still adapting to the division and to a new environment. Now he wants more. A lot more.

“I am even more hungry than last season,” he said. “I adapted more in the Premier League and adapted to the team. The most important thing is to stay healthy and fit, keep every day with a smile and try to help the team with goals and assists.”

The message is clear. World Cup frustration can sit in the past. Leeds’ season is coming fast, and Noah Okafor intends to meet it at full speed.
