Noni Madueke's Miss Sparks Controversy in World Cup Warm-Up
Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins did their part on the scoresheet, stretching the margin and wrapping up what, on paper, looked like a routine win. The scoreline said comfortable. The reaction online said anything but.
One moment in the first half stuck in the throat of a lot of supporters: Noni Madueke’s glaring miss and, just as importantly for many, the way he seemed to brush it off with a smile.
The incident lit up X within minutes. @cooksbits didn’t hold back: “Hopefully that’s the last we see of him this World Cup. Does ANYONE think he should be there?”
The criticism snowballed. “Laughing and smiling about it send him back and get foden here such a washed player,” wrote @marklamb2002, zeroing in on the winger’s body language as much as the chance itself.
Another user, @click00001, went for the selection debate head‑on: “The only reason why he’s in that squad is because he’s part of a premier league winning team. He contributed about 1 goal and 2 assists btw. I’d take out of form Palmer or Bowen over him without thinking twice.”
The performance may have ended in victory, but for Madueke the inquest began immediately. A miss from that range, in that much space, is the kind of moment that follows an attacker around at a major tournament.
To his credit, he fronted up after the final whistle.
“I should have scored one,” he admitted. “We definitely had a few chances, Morgz [Morgan Rogers] I think. But it will come. Better to miss them now than when the tournament starts."
No excuses, just a nod to the timing and the stakes still to come.
He went further when pressed on the specifics of the chance. “I should’ve probably gone with my right foot. Obviously, it was happening quick. I should’ve scored it, but when the tournament comes, I will score them.”
The reaction online shows how thin the margin for error is in a squad fight this fierce. Madueke knows it. One miss in a warm‑up game has already opened up the Palmer and Bowen debate. The next time the ball drops for him, it may define whether that conversation rumbles on or finally goes quiet.
