Nottingham Forest Sign Ousmane Diomande for £34.2m
Nottingham Forest have made a major statement in the market, landing Côte d’Ivoire defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting in a deal reported at £34.2m.
The 22-year-old centre-back has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest holding an option for an extra year, as the club doubles down on its plan to build a younger, high-ceiling core around the first team.
Forest’s chief football officer, George Syrianos, did not hide his excitement. “He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest,” he said, underlining exactly why the club were prepared to invest so heavily.
Diomande’s rise has been rapid. He began his professional career in Denmark with FC Midtjylland before Sporting moved to secure him in January 2023. From there, he became a mainstay. Across all competitions, he racked up 132 appearances for the Portuguese side, anchoring a defence that mixed domestic dominance with European ambition.
Last season he started both legs of Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal, a tie that showcased his temperament and timing on the biggest stage. On the international front, he carried that composure into the World Cup, playing the full 90 minutes in Côte d’Ivoire’s group-stage win over Curaçao. For a 22-year-old defender, those are hard miles at elite level – exactly the kind Forest hope to tap into.
If Forest’s move speaks of long-term defensive stability, Fulham’s latest signing has a different kind of charge to it.
Fulham break new ground for Charles
At Craven Cottage, Fulham have pushed through a record deal for a Northern Ireland international, signing Shea Charles from Southampton for a reported £30m.
Charles, also 22, has agreed a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, a clear indication that Fulham see him as a central pillar in their next cycle. A versatile midfielder with the engine to patrol large areas of the pitch, he arrives with the expectation of stepping straight into the Premier League spotlight.
“It’s a great club, with a really good vision – the manager [Alvaro Arbeloa] explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege,” Charles said. “I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it’s perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well.”
This is not a speculative punt. A record outlay for a Northern Ireland player carries weight, and Fulham are betting that Charles can grow into the heartbeat of Arbeloa’s midfield, knitting play while giving them the legs and aggression they have sometimes lacked in the middle of the park.
Jorgensen heads to France for game time
While Forest and Fulham buy, Chelsea have chosen a different route for one of their key squad players. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has joined Strasbourg on a season-long loan, seeking regular minutes after a year of rotation at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old, signed from Villarreal in 2024, has already made 36 appearances for Chelsea. Last season he started all but one of their Conference League matches and featured 12 times across all competitions, a respectable return in a crowded goalkeeping department but not enough to guarantee the rhythm he needs at this stage of his career.
Strasbourg, who finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season, offer that opportunity. A full campaign as a No 1 in France’s top flight gives Jorgensen a different kind of test: hostile away grounds, a varied tactical landscape, and the expectation that he will win points on his own.
