Novak Djokovic Shares Fitness Update Ahead of China Open Return

Novak Djokovic feels good as he prepares for his first match at the China Open, marking his return to competition since a surprising early exit at the US Open. The Serbian star, seeded sixth in Beijing, will face Nuno Borges in his opening round.

Djokovic’s loss at the US Open to Mariano Navone was unexpected, especially following his participation in a mixed doubles match with WTA standout Aryna Sabalenka. Now, he is focused on regaining momentum at the ATP 500 event, which coincides with the Japan Open and features top contenders like Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Fitness and Confidence on Display in Beijing

Speaking to reporters, Djokovic reflected on his physical condition ahead of the tournament. He said, "Yeah, feeling good so far. Let's see. Obviously it’s completely different when you’re playing an official match compared to practice sets or sessions. But so far so good."

The 24-time Grand Slam champion added that returning to China has always excited him, noting his strong record there brings confidence. "My record speaks for itself on Chinese soil. Knowing that, it also brings this dimension of confidence that I really need. Yeah, overall it’s been really good so far with the body, the way I’m feeling and playing."

Impressive Record and Long-awaited Comeback

Djokovic's claim about his success in China holds weight. He boasts an unbeaten 29-0 match record in Beijing and has won six titles there. Despite this, he hasn’t played in Beijing since 2015, mostly focusing on Shanghai in recent years due to scheduling.

The former world number one expressed happiness about returning to the China Open after an 11-year absence. He explained, "At this stage of my career it’s really also about the tournaments where I enjoy playing, where I had success in the past, where I feel welcomed by the fans in a positive way. The history of my results on Chinese soil has been incredible. I was trying to make it work in past years with the schedule, but it only allowed me to play Shanghai. This year, Beijing was a priority. I’m really glad I’m here."

Current Form and Upcoming Matchup

Before the China Open, Djokovic has climbed one spot in the ATP rankings to number 11. His record this year stands at 14 wins and 7 losses. He has faced Nuno Borges once before, winning their quarterfinal clash in Athens in 2025 on his way to capturing that title.
