Orlando Pirates Mourn the Loss of Mrs Maleshoane Elizabeth “Nani” Chakane
Orlando Pirates are in mourning after the passing of Mrs Maleshoane Elizabeth “Nani” Chakane, the beloved wife of long-serving club figure Mr Franklin Chakane, on 23 June 2026.
A familiar and respected presence around the Buccaneers’ family, “Nani” Chakane’s death has cast a sombre shadow over the club. In a heartfelt message, Pirates expressed their deepest sympathies to Mr Chakane, the wider Chakane family, relatives, friends, and all whose lives were touched by her.
The club has called on supporters and the broader football fraternity to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers during this period of grief.
Funeral Arrangements
Funeral arrangements have been confirmed. The service will be held on Thursday, 2 July 2026, at the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa in Orlando East, Soweto, starting at 09:00. After the church service, the funeral procession is scheduled to leave at approximately 11:00 for the burial at Nasrec Cemetery.
Mourners are welcome at the family home at 1173 Jacobs Street, Protea North, Soweto, where the Chakanes are receiving visitors.
In a club built on community and shared history, the loss of “Nani” Chakane is felt far beyond one household. It touches an entire football family.
