Paris Brunner should have been walking out of the Stade de la Meinau as the hero. Instead, he left at the centre of a storm.

He insisted the celebration was an emotional release in a high-pressure moment, not a threat or a sign of hatred. The message, he claimed, was that his goal had settled the contest.
The image, though, told a different story for many watching.
Instagram clarification and apology
As criticism grew through the evening, Brunner returned to the incident on his Instagram story. This time, the tone softened.
He accepted that the gesture was “clumsy” and acknowledged the reaction it provoked among Strasbourg fans and beyond, while again stressing that he held respect for the opposition and their supporters.
“I’m sorry if it hurt anyone’s feelings,” he posted. “I acted in the heat of the moment; the gesture was clumsy and I shouldn’t have done it.”
The apology did little to quiet the wider debate. Clips of the celebration continued to circulate, with calls for the LFP disciplinary committee to act. For now, his fate remains uncertain.
Monaco’s rising star under the spotlight
The controversy arrives just as Brunner’s Monaco career has begun to accelerate. After a standout pre-season and a recent two-goal performance against Marseille, he has quickly become a central figure in Monaco’s attack.
His form is one of the reasons les Rouge et Blanc sit at the top of the Ligue 1 standings. His movement stretches defences, his finishing has sharpened, and his confidence has grown with every appearance.
