Penybont Secures Gritty 1-0 Win Over Colwyn Bay

Penybont clung on to their unbeaten start to the Cymru Premier season with a gritty 1-0 win over Colwyn Bay, climbing to sixth after a night that started in chaos and ended in relief.

The game was barely underway when Rhys Griffiths’ plans were ripped up. Summer signings Jonathan Leko and Ryan Hill both limped off inside the opening 20 minutes, forcing an early reshuffle and draining some of the noise from the home crowd. For a spell, Penybont looked shaken.

Then the bench changed everything.

Owain Pritchard, one of the early replacements, seized his moment. When Colwyn Bay keeper Mark Halstead misjudged a routine situation, Pritchard pounced, reacting quickest to tuck the ball home from close range and give the hosts the lead. It was scrappy, opportunistic – and exactly what Penybont needed.

The pressure almost broke Bay again soon after. Veteran forward Chris Venables, still a threat in any box, climbed to meet a cross and crashed his effort against the crossbar, inches away from doubling the advantage and effectively killing the contest.

That miss kept Colwyn Bay alive, and they grew into the second half. The visitors pushed higher, committed more bodies forward and began to test young goalkeeper Daniel Higgs. He stood firm. Higgs denied Callum Bratley, then Ethan Roberts, as Bay drove at Penybont in search of an equaliser.

The closing stages turned into a siege. Clearances were hacked away, tackles flew in, and every loose ball felt like it might tilt the game. But Penybont refused to buckle.

When the final whistle went, the scoreline was narrow, the performance patched together, but the message was clear: injuries, pressure, late chances – Penybont handled it all and kept their season moving in the right direction.
