Pep Chavarria: The Late-Blooming Left-Back Joining Chelsea
Pep Chavarria has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea, marking a major step in his career. Unlike many top players who break through early in prestigious academies, Chavarria spent much of his early career in Spain's lower leagues and only debuted in La Liga at 24 years old.
At 28, he moves from Rayo Vallecano to Chelsea for about £16.3 million plus £1.7 million in add-ons. "I'm really excited to get started," said Chavarria. "This is a dream because Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s a huge opportunity but I’m ready to work hard and help the team succeed."
From Catalonia's Lower Divisions to Top Flight
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Chavarria began at his hometown club before advancing to Olot, where he gained recognition in Spain’s lower divisions. His move to Real Zaragoza in 2020 introduced him to professional football at a higher level. After two seasons in Spain's second tier, he joined Rayo Vallecano in 2022, stepping into La Liga.
Rayo, not expected to challenge Spain’s top teams, became tough competitors through strong teamwork and smart recruitment. They signed Chavarria for under £2 million, and he evolved into a reliable left-back, blending defensive toughness with physicality.
Chavarria made 125 appearances for Rayo and faced some of the best managers and players in the league, including Xabi Alonso, now Chelsea’s head coach. In a goalless draw against Real Madrid last November, Chavarria impressed with his disciplined and aggressive defending, catching Alonso’s eye.
He also started in last season’s Conference League final, where Rayo lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
Fitting into Chelsea’s Plans
Alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, signed for £47 million from Atalanta, Chavarria’s addition allows Alonso to implement his preferred wing-back system, which brought success at Bayer Leverkusen. His arrival also strengthens the left-back spot following Marc Cucurella's departure to Real Madrid for £51.8 million in June.
Challenges in Negotiations
The transfer wasn’t straightforward. Rayo Vallecano initially insisted on the full release clause of £42.4 million for Chavarria. Negotiations were complex, with Rayo convinced the price reflected Chavarria’s quality, comparing him statistically to Cucurella.
