Peter Schmeichel Critiques Man Utd Defenders After Hull Defeat
Manchester United’s return to Premier League duty under Michael Carrick took a brutal turn at Hull City – and Peter Schmeichel knew exactly where to point the finger.
Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy delivered a statement win for the Tigers and left United’s back line exposed. Schmeichel, watching on for Premier League Productions, didn’t sugar-coat what he saw. He went straight for the defenders he felt switched off at the key moments.
Dorgu and Heaven in the spotlight
The first goal, from a corner, set him off.
Schmeichel highlighted Patrick Dorgu’s role at the near post, accusing the defender of losing focus at the worst possible time.
“Observe Dorgu at the front post; he is not even watching the player taking the corner kick. At that precise moment, he loses focus and lacks the capability to block the first ball,” Schmeichel said, dissecting the opener.
The danger didn’t end there. At the far post, Ayden Heaven was next in the firing line. He allowed Oli McBurnie to get the run on him before Ajayi struck, a basic defensive lapse that infuriated the former United goalkeeper.
“And naturally, Ayden Heaven at the back post. He allows [Oli] McBurnie to get behind him. That is unacceptable. That is not how one should defend; one must be more assertive.”
Two players. Two concentration lapses. One costly goal.
Shaw blamed for Mendy strike
When Nobel Mendy added Hull’s second, Schmeichel turned his attention to one of United’s most experienced heads: Luke Shaw.
This time, it was the defensive line that collapsed, with Shaw accused of losing his bearings and playing the Hull attackers onside at a decisive moment.
“It is the complete lack of concentration from Manchester United that disappoints me the most. I singled out Luke Shaw. Luke Shaw is two yards behind everyone else, putting everyone else onside. He should not be in that position. He was deceived by the dummy,” Schmeichel said.
“If he stayed up there, he would be either offside or it would have gone out for a goal kick. That’s a disappointment for me, that an experienced team like that makes mistakes like that.”
For Schmeichel, this wasn’t about tactics or fitness. It was about focus, authority, and the kind of basic defending he believes a club of United’s stature should take for granted.
Carrick now has little time to repair both the defensive structure and the confidence behind it. Another newly promoted side, Ipswich Town, arrive at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30.
