This success led to a high-profile £142 million transfer to Barcelona in January 2018, just a year after Neymar left for Paris Saint-Germain.

Though challenges followed in Spain, Coutinho won two La Liga titles and later enjoyed a fruitful loan at Bayern Munich, lifting the Champions League trophy in 2020. That same year, he notably scored twice against Barcelona in Bayern’s famous 8-2 quarter-final win.

Back to England Before Returning Home

Seeking to revive his career, Coutinho returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa, initially on loan in early 2022, then permanently that summer. Despite moments of brilliance under Steven Gerrard, regular first-team opportunities were limited. Though contracted until 2026, a deal allowed Coutinho to leave Villa early and return to Brazil, joining Vasco da Gama again before moving on to Santos.
