Plymouth Secures First Away Win in League One
Plymouth claimed their first away win of the Sky Bet League One season with a 3-2 victory at winless Doncaster – a scoreline that flattered the hosts after Tom Cleverley’s side took control and never really let it go.
Will Evans, Bim Pepple and substitute Caleb Watts delivered the goals that pushed Argyle clear, their composure in front of goal a sharp contrast to Doncaster’s uncertainty at the back. Only a stoppage-time header from Sean Grehan put any gloss on the score for the home side.
Evans strikes as Plymouth take charge
Doncaster started with intent but it was Plymouth who grew steadily into the contest, tightening their grip with every attack. The breakthrough came on 28 minutes and it was scruffy, but it was enough.
Oliver Irow drove in a low strike that Tommy Simkin could only parry. Evans reacted first, turning the loose ball home to put Argyle in front and silence the early home optimism.
Doncaster looked to Alfie May for a response. He almost produced a moment of real class before the interval, his bicycle kick looping towards goal before a deflection carried it over the bar. It was a warning, but Plymouth held their lead into the break.
May’s penalty wakes Doncaster – briefly
The restart brought the lifeline Doncaster had been chasing. Six minutes into the second half, Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola and the referee pointed to the spot.
May stepped up in the 51st minute and this time he did not miss, drilling home the penalty to haul Doncaster level and inject some noise back into the stadium.
For a few minutes, the momentum threatened to tilt. Doncaster pushed, the crowd sensed a shift. Plymouth simply reset and went again.
Pepple and Watts kill it off
The pressure told at the other end. With 16 minutes to play, Argyle sliced Doncaster open and Pepple found himself with room to breathe. Slipped into space, he kept his head and finished calmly on 74 minutes to restore the visitors’ advantage.
Doncaster wobbled. Plymouth smelled the game.
On 83 minutes, the contest was effectively over. A defensive mix-up in the home back line gifted substitute Watts the simplest of chances. He pounced, strode onto the loose ball and fired into an empty net to make it 3-1, the away end celebrating a first road win of the campaign.
Only in the dying moments did Doncaster threaten anything resembling a fightback. Deep into stoppage time, Grehan rose to meet a Bayley McCann free-kick and thumped a header past the keeper. It was a firm finish, but it arrived with the game already gone.
Plymouth walked away with three points, their first away success in the league under Cleverley, while Doncaster’s wait for a win drags on and the questions around their season grow louder.
