Porto vs. Manchester City: Perfect Starts Collide
The Estádio do Dragão gets the first big European night of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 8, as Porto welcome Manchester City to open their 2026-27 UEFA Champions League league phase campaigns.
Both arrive with perfect domestic records. Only one can keep that intact.
Porto flying in the league, eyes on Europe
Porto could hardly be in better shape. Five games, five wins in the Primeira Liga, and they sit alone at the top of the table after a 2-1 victory over Moreirense in their latest outing. Confidence is high, the rhythm is good, and the Dragão will expect that form to carry onto the continental stage.
Francesco Farioli, though, has to juggle a worrying injury list. Seven players are unavailable for the visit of City, forcing some early-season improvisation.

Maresca doesn’t have a clean bill of health either. Jeremy Doku misses out with a calf injury, while Nico O’Reilly is sidelined by a back problem. One is a key attacking weapon, the other a promising option for rotation.
There was at least a small boost from the manager’s latest press conference. Maresca confirmed that O’Reilly could return in time for the derby against Manchester United on Sunday, Sept. 13, but he admitted Doku’s recovery remains uncertain. “Nico probably yes; Jeremy, we’re not sure yet. We need to wait,” he said.
Even with those absences, City arrive stacked. Their predicted starting XI in Porto: Donnarumma; Nunes, Guehi, Dias, Ait-Nouri; Anderson, Bouaddi; Semenyo, Cherki, Foden; Haaland.
A blend of power, control, and incision. And the kind of depth that turns group stages into long, controlled marches.
