Premier League Gameweek 5: Arteta Confident on Defensive Options

Fourteen managers filed through Friday’s Premier League press-conference carousel, with Arsenal, Brighton and Fulham among the clubs shaping the Gameweek 5 narrative through team news and injury updates.

The headlines? Mikel Arteta sounded bullish on his backline options, Brighton will have to wait to unleash Femi Azeez, and Fulham are without Kenny Tete after concussion.

Arsenal: Arteta relaxed over defensive fitness

Mikel Arteta cut a confident figure as he assessed his squad ahead of the weekend, particularly after the brief scare around Ben White.

The defender appeared to tweak his groin in the win over Sunderland, but Arteta’s message was clear.

“They are all good, we have another training session this afternoon, so we are really positive about everybody,” he said when asked directly about White’s fitness.

The same upbeat tone extended to Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber, all of whom missed the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town. Timber’s absence had already been explained as a case of managing minutes rather than a fresh problem, and Arteta doubled down on that sense of calm.

“Yeah, we have another session, they are all willing to be part of it, and we have another session to try to make sure that they are fit,” he said when pressed on whether Hincapie, Mosquera and Timber were included in his “all good” assessment.

One key name remains unavailable. William Saliba is still sidelined with a back issue, leaving Arteta to lean heavily on the rest of his defensive core.

The Arsenal manager spent part of his media duties talking up Ezri Konsa’s influence, both as a player and as a presence in the dressing room.

“I heard some great things about Ezri before he joined and when you have him daily you just realise the magnitude of the player that we signed, not only the player but the person, the way he presents himself, the way he’s able to connect with people immediately,” Arteta said.

He highlighted Konsa’s bond with “Big Gabi” and the importance of that partnership.

“When you see those two in the corridors talking the way they interact with each other, it seems like they’ve been here for a long, long, long time together, which is great because that’s a partnership that in my opinion is extremely important on the field and then his attributes, the quality that he delivers to the team is something that really makes us better.”

Arteta also addressed Eberechi Eze’s role from the left, a position he feels suits the player’s instincts and history.

“He’s always played there in his career, that’s where all his biggest moments in his career and the highlights of his career have come and I think it’s a place that he feels very, very, very comfortable,” Arteta said.

He hinted that the decision between Eze and Christos Tzolis on that flank will be shaped by context.

“In form, in the opponent, in the relationship that we have within that unit, there are a lot of factors [in deciding who starts between Eze and Christos Tzolis on the left].”

The message from Arsenal’s camp was simple: depth is there, options are live, and aside from Saliba, the defensive department looks ready for the weekend.

Brighton: Azeez on ice until after the break

At Brighton, Fabian Hurzeler will have to wait a little longer to work with new signing Femi Azeez in competitive action.

The summer arrival is still sidelined with a hamstring issue and won’t feature before the September international break.

“I think that the best thing for Femi is that he uses this [international break] to get back on his highest physical level and then get used to our style of play,” Hurzeler explained.

“Then, we will try to work with him individually and hopefully integrate him back into the team, then definitely after the international break, he will be on a top level and we can use him in games.”

Brighton’s absentee list remains lengthy. Mats Wieffer (knee), Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh (leg), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee) and Zadok Yohanna are all still out.

There was better news elsewhere. Jaouen Hadjam, who took a knock in midweek, is “able to play”, while teenage defender Luka Vuskovic is available after suffering only cramp in the 3-2 win over Manchester United.

“He’s young, he will recover fast. He definitely will be an option for tomorrow,” Hurzeler said of Vuskovic.

Club captain Lewis Dunk, rested for the Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford, is also back in contention, restoring experience to a back line that has leaned on youth in recent weeks.

Another positive came in attack, where Georginio Rutter made his return from injury with a substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup third round, offering Hurzeler another option as Brighton juggle injuries and minutes.

Fulham: Tete ruled out under concussion protocol

Fulham’s build-up comes with a significant defensive absence.

Kenny Tete will sit out as he follows concussion protocol after a head injury, leaving Marco Silva without his first-choice right-back. There is no shortcut around that process, and Fulham will have to adapt.

Tom Cairney also remains unavailable with a knee problem, keeping one of Silva’s most experienced midfield options out of the frame.

With Arsenal talking up partnerships, Brighton juggling a long injury list and Fulham forced into changes at the back, Gameweek 5 already feels like one that will test squads as much as starting XIs.
