The 20-year-old goalkeeper, long regarded as one of the most promising stoppers in United’s academy, has completed a permanent move to the Riverside in a package that could rise to £14million. If the add-ons are triggered, it would set a new benchmark for a Championship goalkeeper.
United make way – but on their terms
Vitek’s exit has felt inevitable since United moved to reshape their goalkeeping department. Karl Darlow arrived on a free transfer to compete with Senne Lammens, who remains the club’s first-choice heading into the new season. That pushed Vitek further down the pecking order and left little room for a young keeper determined to play, not watch.

The deal is laced with protection. United retain a buy-back clause, matching rights on any future offers, and a hefty 35 per cent sell-on clause. If Vitek explodes at Middlesbrough and moves again, Old Trafford will feel the benefit.
A young keeper tired of waiting
Vitek’s stance has been clear all summer. He wanted out if he was not going to be a genuine contender for the No 1 shirt.
He did not hide it, either. Speaking after United’s opening pre-season game against Wrexham, he stopped to talk and laid out his intentions in plain terms.
"I feel great and ready to go again somewhere to be, hopefully, number one, so we will see, we will see what is going to happen," he said.
He did not want another season as a back-up behind Lammens and Darlow. Not another year of training-ground drills and cup cameos. For a goalkeeper of his age, already hardened by multiple loans, the next step had to be a starting role.
From FA Youth Cup hero to Championship gamble
Vitek’s journey at United has been steady, almost textbook. He joined from Czech side Sigma Olomouc in 2020, slotted into the academy and quickly made his presence felt.
He played every match of United’s triumphant 2021/22 FA Youth Cup run, a campaign that showcased his composure and shot-stopping on big nights under the Old Trafford lights. From there, he moved up to the Under-21s, then out into the real world of senior football.
The loans came thick and fast. Accrington Stanley in January 2024 on a six-month spell, a crash course in the physical side of the English game. Then a season-long move to Blau-Weiss Linz in Austria for 2024/25, another productive stint that broadened his experience and hardened his mentality.
Most crucial, though, was his time at Bristol City, where he picked up valuable Championship minutes. That taste of the division sharpened his profile. Clubs at that level took notice, and Middlesbrough have now made the decisive move.
Middlesbrough’s bet on a new No 1
For Boro, this is more than a tidy piece of business. It is a statement.
They came agonisingly close last season, losing the Championship play-off final to Hull City. Promotion slipped away at the final hurdle. To go again, they need not only goals and guile, but a goalkeeper capable of winning tight games and surviving the chaos of a 46-match slog.
Vitek offers exactly that sort of upside. Young, hungry, already battle-tested, and arriving with the pedigree of a club like Manchester United behind him. He gets what he craved: a platform, a realistic shot at being the first name on the teamsheet.
United, meanwhile, walk away with cash, control, and the comfort of knowing that if Radek Vitek becomes the goalkeeper many inside Carrington always thought he could be, they will still have a route back to him.
