Raphinha Returns to Barcelona Camp with High Expectations
Raphinha stepped off the coach at St George’s Park on Monday carrying more than just his kit bag. He arrived with a bruised World Cup, a fragile body, and the weight of expectation from a club that knows exactly how devastating he can be when everything clicks.
The Brazilian has rejoined FC Barcelona’s pre-season camp in England after his summer break, linking up with Hansi Flick and the rest of the squad as they sharpen their plans for the new campaign and that La Liga opener against Elche on 23 August.
This is not just another player reporting for duty. For Flick, it is the return of a key weapon.
World Cup frustration, club responsibility
Raphinha’s last major outing on the international stage ended in frustration. He began Brazil’s World Cup campaign as a starter, taking his place in the first two group games. Then, after just 39 minutes of the second match against Haiti, his right thigh gave way.
Tournament over. Brazil’s, too. They went out to Norway in the round of 16, and Raphinha could do nothing but watch.
Barcelona, though, expect a very different story now. The club believe he has fully recovered from the thigh problem and want him working at full tilt from the moment he settles into Flick’s demanding sessions in the Midlands.
No rush into friendlies
Even so, there will be no reckless shortcuts. Journalist Nil Sola reports that, as things stand, Raphinha is not expected to feature in Barça’s first two friendlies of the summer.
The Blaugrana face Birmingham City on 31 July and Preston North End on 3 August. Both fixtures will help shape Flick’s early ideas, but Raphinha has only just joined the group, and the staff are unwilling to gamble.
The plan is clear: build him up, not burn him out.
Flick wants his Ballon d’Or contender back
For Flick, this is about restoring a version of Raphinha that briefly brushed the game’s elite. During the 2024-25 season, the winger delivered the most explosive football of his career. His numbers were staggering: 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions.
Those figures dragged him into the Ballon d’Or conversation. Not as a token name, but as a serious contender.
Barcelona’s attack moved differently with him on the pitch. They were sharper, more direct, more aggressive in the press. He stretched defences, hunted the ball high, and gave the team a constant outlet on the flank. Under Flick’s first season in charge, Raphinha became the embodiment of the coach’s high-energy blueprint.
Then came last season.
Hamstring issues cut him down twice, stripping rhythm from his game and continuity from Barça’s attack. He still managed 21 goals in 33 appearances, an impressive return for an injury-hit year, but the feeling around the club was obvious: this was only a fraction of what he can offer when fully fit.
A tailored plan for a decisive season
That is why this pre-season carries such importance. Flick and Raphinha have agreed on a shared target: get back to that devastating 2024-25 level and stay there.
To give him the best chance, Barcelona’s new head of physical preparation, Benjamin Kugel, has drawn up an individual programme tailored specifically to the Brazilian’s needs. The work will be precise, the monitoring constant. The aim is simple: keep Raphinha on the pitch, not in the treatment room.
Barça believe that if they can protect his body, his football will take care of the rest. Because they have already seen what happens when he is unleashed for a full season: goals, assists, and a front line that suddenly looks among the most dangerous in Europe.
Raphinha has returned to St George’s Park with scars from the past year, but also with a clear path laid out in front of him. If his body holds, the question for Barcelona is no longer whether he can reach that level again.
It is what that version of Raphinha might mean for their season, and for La Liga’s balance of power.
