Real Betis vs Villarreal: Pressure on Inigo Perez for First Win
Real Betis arrive at Estadio de la Ceramica on Monday chasing a third straight win in all competitions. Villarreal arrive chasing something far more basic: a first victory under Inigo Perez.
Perez searching for lift-off
Perez did not walk into this job as an unknown. He arrived from Rayo Vallecano with his stock high, having taken the Madrid club to eighth in La Liga in 2024-25 and all the way to a Conference League final. That résumé bought him trust. It has not yet brought him wins.
His Villarreal tenure has opened with a five-game winless run in all competitions. The league campaign began with two entertaining but frustrating 2-2 draws, first against Racing Santander and then against Atletico Madrid. Promise going forward, questions at the back.
Those doubts deepened quickly. Villarreal then slipped to consecutive defeats against Alaves and Deportivo La Coruna, results that dragged them towards the wrong end of the table and stripped away any early-season optimism.
Europe did not offer relief. In Perez’s first Champions League match as a head coach, Villarreal twice hauled themselves back into contention in Germany, with a Santiago Mourino header and a stoppage-time own goal from Borussia Dortmund keeping the tie alive. It still ended 3-2 to Dortmund. Another narrow defeat, another empty feeling.
Now comes a pivotal week: Betis at home, then Malaga and Levante before a three-week international break. It already feels like a stretch that could define the tone of Perez’s first season in charge.
One statistic offers him a sliver of comfort. He has never lost as a manager against Betis: one win, four draws from five meetings. It is not dominance, but it is a record he would gladly cling to right now.
Betis riding a wave
While Villarreal search for rhythm, Betis arrive with theirs already humming.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have opened the 2026-27 campaign with four wins from five competitive matches, a start underpinned by resilience as much as flair. The headline result so far came in La Liga last time out: a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid, sealed by Troy Parrott.
Betis carried that momentum straight into Europe. Back in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2005-06, they went to Lille and edged a wild 3-2 contest. They twice trailed. They refused to fold.
Marc Bartra, more commonly the organiser at the back, turned unlikely hero with a brace. Each time Lille struck, Bartra answered. Then, with the game stretched and nerves frayed, Parrott stepped up again. On his Champions League debut, he delivered the decisive goal, just as he had against Madrid.
Those two results have pushed Betis into fifth in La Liga, only three points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. It is early, but the table already hints at a side ready to stay in that top cluster.
History at La Ceramica also leans their way. Betis took four points from Villarreal last season, including a chaotic draw on their last visit when Antony scored twice to drag Pellegrini’s team back from two goals down. That comeback extended Betis’s unbeaten run in league trips to Villarreal to four matches (two wins, two draws) since a 2-0 defeat in October 2021.
Team news and likely XIs
Perez has selection issues to juggle on top of the results. Carlos Romero is expected to remain sidelined, while Juan Foyth, absent from the last two matches through injury, is unlikely to feature.
There is, though, a notable change in goal. Peter Gulacsi, who replaced Luiz Junior for the narrow defeat to Borussia Dortmund, is set to make his La Liga debut for Villarreal.
With the schedule tightening, Perez is ready to rotate. Alex Freeman, Nicolas Pepe, Alberto Moleiro, Ayoze Perez and Gerard Moreno are all pushing to start on Monday, adding fresh legs and, he will hope, a sharper edge in the final third.

There is better news elsewhere. Abde Ezzalzouli and Diego Llorente should both be available, with Llorente set to play in a protective mask after breaking his nose in the win over Real Madrid. Antony, laid low by illness, is expected to recover in time to take up his usual role on the right flank.

A familiar outcome on the cards?
Betis arrive sharper, more confident and with recent history on their side. Villarreal arrive wounded but not yet broken, guided by a coach who, for all his early struggles, has found a way to avoid defeat against this opponent.
The tension around Perez will not ease without a win. Betis, though, are unlikely to roll over. With both sides carrying threats and flaws, the pattern of this fixture under Perez may well repeat itself.
