Real Madrid vs Inter: Mourinho's Midfield Crisis Ahead of Champions League
Real Madrid step into the Champions League under the lights of the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night with a familiar sense of pressure – but this time, it comes as much from the treatment room and disciplinary list as from the opposition.
They open their league-phase campaign against Inter Milan at 9 p.m. CEST, still stinging from a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis at the weekend. Now comes a heavyweight European tie with a squad stretched in the one area José Mourinho can least afford: midfield.
Midfield stripped bare
The numbers are brutal. Eight Real Madrid players are listed as unavailable, and three of them are suspended in Europe.

The injury list only deepens the headache. Raúl Asencio, Endrick, Éder Militão, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo are all out with injuries, removing depth in both defense and attack and limiting the tactical flexibility Mourinho usually enjoys on big European nights.
Aurélien Tchouaméni sits at the center of the uncertainty. The Frenchman has been recovering from a muscular problem and could return, but Mourinho has not confirmed whether he is fit enough to start. Endrick is also a doubt after missing the opening matches of the season with a muscular issue, adding another question mark to a squad already riddled with them.
Mourinho has spoken of having “3, 4, or 5 options” to cope with the midfield crisis. He has no intention of revealing which one he’ll use before kick-off.
Inter arrive with the upper hand
On the other side, Inter Milan travel to Madrid in far better health.
UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Cristian Chivu’s side. The only significant concern is Federico Dimarco, who is struggling with a knee problem picked up during Inter’s Serie A match against Napoli. His condition remains the main issue for Chivu as he finalizes his team.
If Dimarco fails to make it, Inter will have to reconfigure the left flank, a key outlet in their system. But beyond that, the Italian champions have a strong, balanced squad available.

How they could line up
UEFA’s latest predicted lineups underline the contrasting situations.
Mourinho is expected to lean on a 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois should start in goal, with a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen. Across midfield, Denzel Dumfries, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Brahim Díaz and Marc Cucurella are all tipped to start, with Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé forming a devastating – if somewhat isolated – front two.
It’s a setup that asks a huge amount of Bellingham and Valverde, particularly if Tchouaméni is not ready to anchor the middle. The wing-backs will need to run relentlessly to cover the width that the absentees have left exposed.
Inter’s predicted XI also points to a three-man defense. Josep Martínez is expected in goal, behind Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Bastoni. Denzel Dumfries, Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Piotr Zieliński and Dimarco are pencilled in across midfield, with Lautaro Martínez and Francesco Pio Esposito up front.
The final picture could still change. Tchouaméni’s late fitness test could alter the shape of Madrid’s midfield. Dimarco’s status will dictate how aggressive Inter can be down the left. Both decisions will go right up to the wire, with official lineups due around an hour before kick-off.
What’s certain is that Real Madrid enter this Champions League opener carrying more problems than they would like – and Inter arrive sensing an opportunity. The question is whether the Bernabéu, and Mourinho’s improvisation, can tilt the balance back their way on a night when margins are already thin.
