And some big ones are already feeling the impact.
Mourinho draws his lines
Raul Asencio and Franco Mastantuono have been told directly that their roles will be minimal if they stay. They have been encouraged to find exits, whether temporary or permanent, rather than spend a year watching from the bench.
Eduardo Camavinga now finds himself in the same uncomfortable bracket.
According to Sergio Valentin, Mourinho has already sat down with the French midfielder and delivered the kind of verdict no ambitious player wants to hear: he will not be counted on as a key part of the squad this season.
In Mourinho’s hierarchy, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva stand in front of Camavinga. That pecking order leaves little room for regular starts, or even consistent minutes, for a player once seen as a pillar of Madrid’s future.
The message is harsh. The logic, from Mourinho’s point of view, is ruthless but familiar.
Club open to a sale, player refuses the door
Inside the club, the situation is being viewed through another lens as well: timing and value.
With Camavinga still young, established, and highly regarded across Europe, Madrid know his market value is near its peak. A significant offer would help fund the new era Mourinho wants to build and ease the congestion in midfield.
The club would not stand in the way of a sale. In fact, they would welcome one.
But there is a problem for the planners in the offices at Valdebebas: Camavinga does not want to leave.
Reports are consistent on this point. The France international has no intention of walking away from Real Madrid this summer, regardless of the warning about his role. Any offers that land on the table will still need one crucial signature – his – and, for now, he is not interested in signing anything that takes him away from the Bernabeu.
