Real Madrid Nears Blockbuster Diomande Transfer from RB Leipzig
Real Madrid are on the brink of pulling off one of the most expensive deals in Bundesliga history, with talks for RB Leipzig winger Diomande now in the home straight.
According to Sky, Los Blancos are ready to lay down between €130 million and €140 million for the 19-year-old Ivorian. That fee would place him behind only Ousmane Dembele, who left Borussia Dortmund for Barcelona for €148 million, on the all-time outgoing list from Germany’s top flight. Only days ago, the conversation still hovered around €120 million. The price has surged as the poker dragged on.
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reports that a verbal agreement over the terms of the move is already in place. Sky, more cautious, stop short of calling it done. The decisive moment is expected later in the afternoon, when Real Madrid’s board convene to give formal approval. Only then will the final green light flash in Madrid.
A Transfer Saga That Left a Guru Exposed
The path to this point has been anything but smooth.
Diomande travelled to RB Leipzig’s training camp in Saalfelden, Austria, on Wednesday, having officially reported sick before the squad’s departure on Saturday. After recovering from an infection, he joined up with the team in the Alps. Real Madrid had hoped to avoid exactly that scenario, wanting to fly him directly to the Spanish capital for his medical.
The delay came from the negotiating table. Talks with the Saxony club dragged on, even as Fabrizio Romano had already described the deal as done more than a week ago. The premature “Here we go” triggered heavy criticism when the transfer stubbornly refused to cross the line.
RB Leipzig sporting director Marcel Schäfer underlined that frustration on Sky on Tuesday, making it clear that the club were not dancing to the tempo set by transfer insiders.
“When we have something to announce, we will do so. One or two transfer experts already described it seven or 10 days ago as ‘done’ or ‘Here we go’. But that is simply not the case. A lot goes into it. It is not that far yet,” Schäfer said.
The message was blunt: the deal would be finished on Leipzig’s terms, not Twitter’s.
Bayern, Liverpool, PSG – and Madrid Win the Race
This is not a move born overnight. Interest in Diomande has been simmering for months.
Before last season even ended, several European heavyweights circled. Liverpool watched him closely. Bayern Munich ran the numbers. Paris Saint-Germain, reportedly his preferred destination, weighed up a move as well. The winger had options at the very top of the game.
Real Madrid, though, have outlasted and outmuscled the competition. They are pushing through a fee that would make even the biggest clubs blink, and they are doing so despite knowing the transfer may not be cleanly wrapped from a legal perspective.
Behind the scenes, a bitter advisers’ dispute has been raging for months. Maxidel Management, the agency that handled Diomande’s move from Leganes to RB Leipzig last summer, and his new representatives at Roc Nation both believe they are entitled to a slice of the action. Maxidel Management are said to consider themselves still in possession of the player’s transfer rights and want a share of the proceeds from any sale.
If Real Madrid and Leipzig finally close the deal, FIFA are expected to take a closer look at the case. The transfer may be agreed on the pitch and in the boardroom, but it could yet be pored over in legal offices long after Diomande pulls on a white shirt.
From No-Name to Nine-Figure Man
The scale of this move becomes even more striking when you rewind just a year.
Diomande arrived in Leipzig in the summer of 2025 as a largely unknown quantity, plucked from Leganes after only 10 competitive appearances. The €20 million fee raised eyebrows at the time; many wondered what Leipzig had seen that others had missed.
They have their answer now.
In his first season in Germany, the teenager exploded: 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 competitive matches. Pace, directness, and end product turned him from a quiet gamble into one of Europe’s most coveted wide forwards. Leipzig’s reputation for identifying and accelerating raw talent has another shining example – and Madrid are about to pay a premium for it.
If the board in the Spanish capital sign off as expected, Diomande will swap Saalfelden’s training pitches for the Santiago Bernabeu’s bright lights. From a “no-name” at Leganes to a nine-figure transfer in barely a year, his rise has been dizzying.
Now the question is simple: can he live up to a price tag that places him among the most expensive exports in Bundesliga history, in a shirt where excuses rarely survive more than ninety minutes?
