Real Madrid Open to Selling Tchouameni as Manchester United Shows Interest
Manchester United have been given unexpected encouragement in their search for a specialist holding midfielder, with Real Madrid now willing to sell Aurelien Tchouameni for the right price.
United have made a firm enquiry for the France international as they look to finally secure a genuine No6, despite already adding Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to Erik ten Hag’s midfield options this summer. Neither of those signings, though, offers the pure defensive presence United have been chasing for years. Tchouameni does.
Madrid soften stance on Tchouameni
Jose Mourinho had gone into his first pre-season back at the Bernabeu planning to keep Tchouameni at the heart of his midfield rebuild. The 26-year-old, under contract until 2028, was initially viewed as non-negotiable.
That position has shifted.
Madrid, 15-time European champions and ruthless in squad evolution, are now prepared to cash in if a substantial offer lands on the table. Tchouameni cost them an initial €80m, rising to €100m, when he arrived from Monaco four years ago. Any sale would be expected to reflect both that investment and his status as a Champions League winner and World Cup finalist.
Reports in Spain had suggested Tchouameni had already agreed a contract extension, but there has been no official confirmation from the club. Behind the scenes, sources in Madrid describe United’s interest as “strong”, particularly now that France’s World Cup campaign is over and the midfielder’s focus has returned to his club future.
United’s long-running midfield dilemma
United’s pursuit of Tchouameni is not a sudden whim. He was on their shortlist earlier this year and had been offered to them back in 2021 while still at Monaco. At the time, United had not budgeted for a major midfield signing and the opportunity slipped away.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then in charge at Old Trafford, had pushed for a midfielder and was especially keen on Declan Rice. The club hesitated. Two years later, they paid £70m to Madrid for Casemiro, who Tchouameni had been signed to replace.
That deal briefly calmed a crisis. Casemiro arrived at 30, in the aftermath of a 4-0 humiliation at Brentford, and initially imposed authority on a fragile side. His influence bookended his stay, impressing in his first and last seasons, but he also featured in what statistically rank as United’s worst two teams in 34 and 51 years. He was released last month.
The pattern is familiar. Raphael Varane, another marquee arrival from Madrid in 2021, brought pedigree and big-game experience, starting in League Cup and FA Cup final wins, yet never escaped persistent injuries and has now also departed. Angel Di Maria, once a British record signing at £59.7m in 2014, lasted less than a year before leaving under a cloud and was loudly booed on his return to Old Trafford with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.
United know the risks of shopping at Madrid. They also know the upside when it works.
Age, pedigree and a clear profile
This time, the profile is different. Tchouameni sits right in United’s preferred age bracket of 22–26, with prime years ahead rather than behind. He has already started a World Cup final for France and lifted the Champions League with Madrid. He plays the role United have lacked: a true defensive midfielder who screens, intercepts and dictates the tempo from deep.
His age, availability and track record tick every box for a recruitment department that has too often been forced into short-term fixes. United have reinforced their midfield, but Santos is still developing and Tielemans operates higher up the pitch. Neither is the anchor Ten Hag needs to balance a side that has frequently looked stretched between attack and defence.
Madrid’s midfield reshuffle
Madrid’s willingness to listen to offers for Tchouameni comes amid a broader reshaping of their midfield. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City after thriving in a deeper role last season. Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde remain central to their plans, both under contract a year shorter than Tchouameni but firmly established in Mourinho’s options.
With that trio in place and Madrid strongly linked with a move for Spain star Rodri, the picture becomes clearer. Rodri, named the best player at the World Cup, is out of contract at Manchester City next year and has been heavily touted for a switch to Spain this summer. Should Madrid land him, something has to give in an already crowded engine room.
Tchouameni is suddenly no longer untouchable.
A familiar crossroads for United
For United, the equation is stark. They can once again watch an elite holding midfielder move elsewhere, or they can finally commit to the type of long-term solution they have been chasing since the days of Michael Carrick.
They passed on Tchouameni once, then moved for Casemiro as a stop-gap. Now the Frenchman is back within reach, with Madrid open to doing business and a clear tactical need screaming from the Old Trafford pitch.
United’s recent history with Real Madrid signings is mixed at best. The opportunity in front of them, though, looks different: younger legs, a specialist profile, and a player built for the modern game.
The question now is not whether Tchouameni fits. It is whether United are prepared to pay the price to finally fix the position that has held them back for a decade.
