Six signings are already through the door, the squad has been reshaped in key areas, and yet the message from inside Valdebebas is clear: there is still business to be done.
According to journalist Juanma Rodriguez, as relayed by Defensa Central, Real Madrid are preparing three more additions before the window closes. One centre-back. One midfielder. And a third signing whose position has not yet filtered out. For a club that has already moved aggressively, it points to a rebuild far deeper than the headline numbers suggest.
Six in already – and still they push
The early work was decisive. Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries arrived before the World Cup, bolting experience and versatility onto a squad that had grown thin in certain zones. Carlos Espi and Yan Diomande have since stepped up to the first-team setup, adding youthful energy and internal solutions.
On paper, that’s a strong haul. In practice, José Mourinho wants more.
Rodriguez summed it up bluntly: “There will be more moves, from what I'm told. I understand there will be three signings. One of them is a centre-back and another a midfielder. I mean, beyond what has already been signed.”
The implication is unmistakable. This is not a light touch or a cosmetic refresh. This is a structural rebuild shaped around a manager who tends to know exactly what he wants and usually makes sure the club hears it.
Mourinho’s blueprint: start at the back
The priority is clear: another centre-back.
Mourinho is pushing for greater depth and for a defender capable of fighting for a starting role, not just filling minutes. With the calendar packed and standards uncompromising, he wants a back line that can absorb injuries, suspensions and dips in form without losing authority.
Alessandro Bastoni sits near the top of that list. The Italian defender is one of the names most closely linked to Mourinho’s plans, a profile that fits the demand for a high-level, left-sided centre-back who can defend space and contribute in possession.
There is a catch. Bastoni’s arrival is understood to hinge on Raul Asencio leaving the club. Asencio does not feature in Mourinho’s plans, and his departure could trigger the reshuffle in the centre-back department that opens the door for a major signing. Until that domino falls, the situation remains in a holding pattern.
The missing piece in midfield
If the centre-back is about security, the midfielder is about balance.
Mourinho wants a positional midfielder who can sit in front of the defence, protect the back four and give structure to the team’s shape. Not just a runner. Not just a passer. Someone who can anchor the side, read danger early and allow the more creative players to operate with fewer defensive burdens.
That profile has been on his list since the day he walked into Valdebebas. It has not changed.
Real Madrid are monitoring several options, including Adam Wharton and Kees Smit, as they search for the right fit. Both names reflect the type of recruitment the club is considering: players who can grow into the role but already possess the tactical discipline and positional intelligence Mourinho demands.
