According to Globo Esporte journalist Emilio Botta, Regis takes refuge in the northern part of Sao Paulo, specifically in Pirituba, where he sleeps under tarpaulins, worn blankets, and cardboard amidst debris and garbage. His addiction has cost him not only his home but also the support of friends and relatives.

Regis expressed deep pain during an interview with Botta, revealing the mental toll his addiction has taken. Concerns about his health surfaced when former teammates from an amateur club noticed his worsening condition. His substance issues date back to his playing days, as he twice tested positive for cannabis in anti-doping tests.
Career Impacted by Drug Dependency
Throughout his career, Regis scored 49 goals in 170 official matches while playing for clubs like Ponte Preta, Coritiba, Bahia, and Portuguesa, along with spells in Japan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. However, his life spiralled out of control due to drug use after retiring from football. Legal troubles followed; a 2025 arrest for assaulting a building manager led to him losing access to his apartment.
Ongoing Legal and Financial Issues
Regis's last remaining apartment is now entangled in legal battles over unpaid condominium fees and property taxes. Despite the looming threat of foreclosure, reports from Globo Esporte reveal that he still hopes to regain his home one day.
