Rio Ferdinand urges Manchester United to sign Kees Smit

Rio Ferdinand has seen enough. In his eyes, Kees Smit is not just another promising Dutch midfielder; he is a player Manchester United cannot afford to let slip away.

The 20-year-old AZ talent, fresh from his debut for the Netherlands last month, looks to be approaching the end of his time in Alkmaar. After AZ’s 4-0 win over Sparta Prague in the Conference League, Smit openly admitted he is seriously considering a move.

“Basically, I want to play a lot; that’s important to me. I could stay at AZ, but I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he told Ziggo Sport. It was the kind of line that sounds less like speculation and more like a farewell being carefully prepared.

Ferdinand’s verdict: “The real deal”

Ferdinand has wasted no time nailing his colours to the mast. On his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former United defender launched into a glowing assessment of the midfielder and a clear call to his old club.

“Kees Smit is the real deal, I’m telling you,” Ferdinand said. “He’s the kind of player where you think: I’d sign him right now, even if he might not be quite ready for the first team just yet. I hope he breaks through and takes the world by storm. And if we have to wait six months or a year for him, I don’t mind at all, because we absolutely cannot let him go to another club.”

That is not the language of a casual admirer. It is the language of someone who believes United are standing at a fork in the road in the market for young midfield talent.

Ferdinand has been tracking Smit closely, and his enthusiasm only grew as he spoke.

“Kees Smit is a top player, believe me. That lad… I’ve seen him play a few times now and that was enough for me. I’ve seen the footage and… wow! I’ve also spoken to a few people in the Netherlands, friends of mine… He’s got the real deal,” he added.

For a club still searching for a long-term midfield identity, that kind of endorsement from a figure of Ferdinand’s stature will not go unnoticed.

AZ’s rising star, and a heavy price tag

Smit’s performances for AZ have pushed him into the spotlight at a rapid pace. He will be back at the heart of things again on Thursday, when AZ face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Conference League quarter-final. Domestically, AZ are sixth in the Eredivisie, three points behind Ajax, and clinging to the hope of a late-season surge.

While the football world debates his potential, another number has started to dominate the conversation: 60 million euros. That, it is reported, is what AZ are asking for their prize asset.

Smit is not pretending he has not heard it.

“I understand that everyone is talking about it. The figures I’m hearing are absurd. I get that people disagree with it or think it’s a huge amount of money. I feel the same way myself,” he admitted.

It is a rare moment of honesty in a market where transfer fees often detach from reality. Yet absurd or not, those are the stakes now. A 20-year-old with a handful of senior international appearances, a growing European reputation, and a price tag that plants him firmly in the elite bracket.

United’s dilemma

This is where Ferdinand’s plea bites hardest. United have missed out on emerging talents before, watching them flourish elsewhere. Smit, in Ferdinand’s mind, is the kind of player who could define a new cycle rather than merely decorate it.

The question is not whether there is interest across Europe. There is. The question is who is bold enough to pay the price and patient enough to give him the time he demands: minutes, responsibility, a real role rather than a marketing signing.

Smit has made his position clear: he wants to play, and he does not expect that to be at AZ for much longer. AZ have made theirs clear too: anyone wanting him will have to pay.

Between those two lines sits an opportunity. Ferdinand has drawn the map. Now the decision lies in Manchester’s boardrooms: do they move for the “real deal” now, or watch another Dutch talent light up Europe in someone else’s colours?
