Rio Ngumoha's Move to Bayern Munich Falls Through

Rio Ngumoha’s proposed move to Bayern Munich has dramatically fallen through, despite a full verbal agreement reportedly being in place between the German giants and the Liverpool teenager.

The 17-year-old winger, one of the few bright sparks in Liverpool’s grim 2025/26 campaign, had emerged as a surprise priority target for Vincent Kompany as Bayern searched for a left-sided option to compete with Luis Díaz.

They had already missed out on Anthony Gordon, now at Barcelona for £69m. Ngumoha became the next name at the top of their list.

From secret target to collapsed deal

The story first gathered pace when David Ornstein reported that Bayern were exploring a move for Ngumoha, identifying him as their primary target for the left flank. Liverpool, though, were said to be adamant: not for sale, and intent on strengthening their attack, not weakening it.

Behind the scenes, the plot thickened.

German reporter Florian Plettenberg later revealed that Bayern and Ngumoha’s camp had reached a full verbal agreement on Tuesday, 26 May, after weeks of quiet negotiations. The youngster, who joined Liverpool from Chelsea and exploded onto the scene last season, had been a “secret candidate” for the Bundesliga club.

Kompany had even personally approved the move after direct talks with the player, underlining just how highly Bayern rated the 17-year-old “gem”.

Ngumoha was given “absolute priority” as a back-up to Díaz, running alongside Bayern’s pursuit of Gordon. For a club that rarely gambles on raw, foreign teenagers without a clear plan, this was a bold, targeted move.

Then it all fell apart.

Plettenberg reported that the deal collapsed on Thursday “for the time being”, despite that verbal agreement. No club-to-club deal had been struck, and Liverpool’s stance remained firm.

Liverpool’s jewel, Bayern’s missed chance

Inside Anfield, there has long been a belief that Ngumoha could save Liverpool a fortune in the market. His breakout season in a struggling side only strengthened that conviction. Many felt he deserved more minutes than he received under former head coach Arne Slot.

Now, with Andoni Iraola expected to bring a more aggressive, front-foot style, Ngumoha’s profile fits the direction Liverpool want to take. A fearless, direct winger with the confidence to attack defenders, he looks tailor-made for a coach who demands intensity and vertical play.

For Bayern, the collapse of the move shifts the focus back to other targets such as Brown and Saibari, with Plettenberg noting that it remains to be seen whether agreements can be reached there. The need for depth and competition on the flanks has not gone away. Kompany still requires a solution.

For Liverpool, the situation is different. They have stared down one of Europe’s heavyweights and, for now, kept hold of a player many at the club believe is on the verge of a breakout year.

The verbal agreement may have vanished. The spotlight on Rio Ngumoha has not.
