Robbie Keane Steps Down as Ferencváros Coach

Robbie Keane has stepped down from his role as head coach of Ferencváros, bringing a sudden halt to an 18-month spell that rebuilt his reputation on the touchline.

The 45-year-old leaves Budapest with his stock high. He delivered the Hungarian Cup this season and pushed Ferencváros to a second-placed finish in the league, having already guided the club to top-flight glory in the previous campaign. Silverware, pressure, expectation – Keane handled the lot.

His time in Hungary has been about more than trophies. Keane put his faith in youth, most notably helping to elevate Hungary international midfielder Alex Toth, whose rise under his watch has already taken him to the Premier League with Bournemouth. For a club that prides itself on tradition and identity, that willingness to promote and trust emerging talent struck a chord.

This was not his first successful stop as a manager. Before Ferencváros, Keane claimed an Israeli league title with Maccabi Tel Aviv during a one-year stint in charge, adding another line to a growing CV that is beginning to demand attention across Europe.

Attention is exactly what he has now. The Republic of Ireland’s all-time record goalscorer is currently the favourite to take over at Scottish champions Celtic, a club that already knows his finishing instincts from his loan spell in 2010, when he scored 12 goals in just 16 games. That brief cameo left a lasting impression. The prospect of Keane returning to Glasgow, this time with a clipboard rather than a captain’s armband, feels like a natural next chapter.

For Ferencváros, his departure ends a short but decorated era. For Keane, it opens a door. Whether that door leads to Celtic Park or somewhere else, his touchline journey is accelerating, not slowing.
