Barcelona midfielder Rodri has issued a public apology after being caught on camera making disparaging remarks about Valencia during their recent La Liga clash. The Spanish international was seen criticizing the opposition while Barcelona secured a commanding 5-0 victory at Mestalla.

The incident took place during Barcelona's dominant performance, which deepened Valencia’s struggles near the bottom of the league table. Although the game was one-sided, attention shifted to the visitors' bench where broadcaster Movistar captured a private conversation involving Rodri, Pau Cubarsi, and Raphinha.
According to reports, Rodri said, “They’re really weak (Valencia). They haven’t got past the halfway line.” This footage was aired with commentary explaining the exchange, causing a backlash from Valencia supporters who viewed the remarks as disrespectful amid their difficult season.
Direct Apology to Captain Jose Gaya
Recognizing the impact of his words, Rodri acted quickly to address the situation behind the scenes. He personally contacted Valencia captain Jose Gaya to explain and express regret. Afterwards, he spoke publicly following Barcelona’s 5-1 Champions League win over Feyenoord, aiming to clarify the circumstances.
“First and foremost, I’d like to apologise to anyone who may have felt offended,” Rodri said. “I had a phone call with my friend Jose Gaya and apologised to him and the whole squad. I want to make it clear that it was an expression of surprise; anyone who watches the video can see that at no point did I intend to mock or take any team out of context. Quite the opposite.”
He also praised Valencia’s stature, adding, “I hope Valencia return to their rightful place as one of the best clubs in this league. It was a private conversation. We should all learn that sometimes things are taken out of context, but at no point did I intend to be disrespectful.”
Barcelona Focuses on Winning Streak
Despite the controversy, Barcelona maintained their momentum, dismantling Feyenoord with goals from Karim Adeyemi, Lamine Yamal, two from Raphinha, and a debut strike by Gabriel Jesus. The 5-1 victory marked a strong start to their European campaign.
With the Valencia issue hopefully behind him, Rodri and his teammates now turn their attention back to La Liga. The Catalan giants are set to face Levante on Sunday, aiming to preserve their perfect start and hold onto the top spot in the standings.
