Hansi Flick Confirms Rodri's Barcelona Debut Set for Athletic Club Match
Hansi Flick has revealed that Rodri is expected to make his first appearance for Barcelona during their upcoming La Liga match versus Athletic Club. The former Manchester City midfielder joined the Catalan giants this summer amid high hopes but was not involved in the opening game against Elche.
Midfield Adjustments as Gavi Sidelined
The new signing will get minutes on the pitch after training with the squad, while Gavi remains out due to a knee injury sustained in the win over Elche. Flick described Gavi's condition as improved but confirmed the young midfielder will be absent for about a week.
Flick’s Strategy for Rodri's Integration
Before the match, Flick explained his plan for gradually introducing Rodri. "The idea is to give him some minutes," the coach said. He highlighted Rodri's experience and leadership qualities compared to other players like Marc Bernal. Alongside Pedri, Rodri is expected to help control possession and manage the opponent’s pressure, addressing the ball control issues seen in the previous match.
"Rodri has more experience; he’s the clear leader. Together with Pedri, he’ll allow us to control the ball and the opponent. That’s very important," Flick stated.
Pre-Match Tribute Cancelled Amid Political Tensions
The match comes amid political unrest following incidents during Barcelona's recent victory against Elche. A planned tribute to the eight Spanish World Cup winners from the club was called off after reports of police clashes with fans carrying pro-independence flags. Club president Joan Laporta condemned the police actions and defended fans' right to express themselves, calling for sanctions against officers involved.
"We condemn and reject the disproportionate action of the national police officers who assaulted Barca fans for carrying the Estelada before the Elche game," Laporta said.
Looking Ahead: Building Momentum in La Liga
With a strong start to the season, Barcelona aims to improve possession control through Rodri’s inclusion, especially against Athletic Club’s pressing style. The team faces a quick follow-up fixture against Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou on Monday, where Flick hopes to have Rodri fully commanding the midfield and Gavi nearing his return.
