Rodri Highlights Need for Stability in Barcelona's Champions League Pursuit
Rodri, the new Barcelona midfielder, has given a straightforward view on the club’s chances in the Champions League, emphasizing that tactical discipline matters more than flair. After moving from Manchester City, where he won several titles including the club’s first-ever Champions League, Rodri believes Barcelona is ready but still has work to do to reclaim European glory.
Balancing Ambition and Reality
Since joining Barcelona, Rodri has become a key player under coach Hansi Flick. The 30-year-old arrived following a successful seven years in England, but he remains grounded about the team’s prospects. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, he stated:
"Yes, I see the title as achievable, it’s just that small step we need to prove ourselves to Europe. But I don’t think we’re favorites yet. We have to understand our past and what it takes to be champions. This team still needs to polish certain things."
Tactical Maturity as a Deciding Factor
Rodri’s experience under Pep Guardiola, especially ending City's European drought with a winning goal in the 2023 final, shapes his approach. Although Barcelona boasts five European titles, they haven't reached a final since 2014-15. Their best recent runs were semi-finals in 2018-19 and 2024-25. Rodri feels the squad has talent but lacks the knockout stage experience crucial for success.
"The Champions League isn’t about who’s best overall; it’s about moments and knowing how to handle them. That’s the gap this team must close. That’s why I came here," he added.
Learning from Past Setbacks
Recent Champions League campaigns have seen Barcelona struggle with defensive mistakes and key errors, such as last season’s quarter-final loss to Atletico Madrid, marked by a red card for Pau Cubarsi. Rodri pointed out the importance of managing critical moments in tight matches.
"It’s about controlling those decisive moments in a tie — red cards, penalties, conceding too much. Being less flashy offensively but more consistent and solid can make the difference between advancing or not."
Experience as a Path to Success
Despite a strong start to the current season—winning their first five La Liga games and thrashing Feyenoord 5-1 in the Champions League opener—Rodri says the team is still learning. The lessons from previous defeats will build a stronger foundation.
"Teams that win show you there’s always room to improve, and that ties to experience. Before winning, you have to lose and learn. I’ve played many Champions League matches before winning, so I know it’s a process. Players grow every year."
