Rodri’s Desire for Real Madrid Exposes Manchester City
Manchester City have taken plenty of blows in recent years. This one comes from the inside.
Rodri, the metronome of Pep Guardiola’s midfield, has made it plain: he wants Real Madrid. Not a move abroad, not a bidding war, not a long summer saga. Real Madrid or nothing.
That stance has blown apart City’s strategy for this window.
Spanish journalist Sergio Valentín of Marca radio revealed on X that City tried to stir up a market for the Spain international, attempting to draw other giants into the race. They failed. Rodri, he reported, “closed the door on all other options.”
Once that door slammed shut, the balance of power shifted.
Real Madrid in control
With the player fixed on the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid suddenly hold the strongest hand at the table. Valentín reports that an agreement between Rodri and Real Madrid is already in place, with only the fee left to settle between the clubs.
Real now negotiate knowing the midfielder will not entertain alternatives. That gives them room to squeeze the price, even as they push hard to bring him back to La Liga after his outstanding World Cup campaign. José Mourinho, in charge at the Bernabéu, has already given the move his approval.
Valentín insists Real “will not let go of Rodri” and expects the deal to land somewhere between €65 million and €75 million. City, for their part, are holding out for the upper end of that range, digging in at €75 million as the number to sanction his departure.
Real’s ideal figure is lower. They are trying to drag the fee closer to €60 million, but every sign points to a compromise in that €65–75 million band, driven by the player’s unwavering desire to step into the white shirt.
Rivals step aside
The clarity of Rodri’s intentions has echoed across Europe. Clubs that would normally fight tooth and nail for a midfielder of his calibre have stepped back.
Paris Saint-Germain looked at the situation. So did Bayern Munich. Both have now cooled their interest, unwilling to invest time and money in a chase where the finish line is already painted in white.
Even Barcelona, who could use a midfielder of Rodri’s profile more than ever after Frenkie de Jong’s injury, have kept their distance. The Catalan club limited themselves to sounding out the player’s entourage, stopping short of entering formal talks with Manchester City.
They understood the message quickly. Competing head‑to‑head with Real Madrid for a player who openly prioritises the Bernabéu is a tall order. Factor in Barça’s recent heavy spending and the need to cover several positions this window, and finding an extra €75 million for Rodri becomes more fantasy than plan.
A deal edging closer
So the stage is set. City want top dollar. Real Madrid sense an opportunity they rarely pass up: an elite, World Cup‑hardened midfielder desperate to join them, with major rivals already stepping aside.
Inside the Bernabéu offices, there is optimism. Not reckless confidence, but a belief that the deal is there to be done if they handle the talks with care. City know exactly what they have in Rodri and are in no rush to weaken the heart of Guardiola’s side. Real know exactly what he wants.
Between €65 million and €75 million lies the gap both clubs must bridge. Rodri’s determination to return to Spain, and to do it in Madrid’s white, is the lever Real will keep pulling.
