Rodri Negotiates New Man City Deal Amid Real Madrid Interest

Manchester City’s most important midfielder is in no rush, but the clock is ticking loudly around him.

Rodri, entering the final year of his contract this summer, has made it clear that nothing will be signed, agreed, or even seriously addressed until after the FIFA World Cup. His focus, for now, lies with Spain and a tournament across the Atlantic. Everything else waits.

City close the gap

Reports from Spain, via Marca journalist Matteo Moretto, indicate that City and Rodri are “not far” from a contract renewal agreement. The Premier League champions have placed what is described as a “weighty” offer on the table, and the 29-year-old is taking his time to study it.

That phrasing matters. A “weighty” proposal suggests City have moved decisively to close the financial gap that had threatened to derail talks.

Fabrizio Romano previously outlined that the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner wanted an improved package compared to City’s initial terms, with money – not ambition or role – the main sticking point. City view Rodri as irreplaceable in midfield, and their latest bid reflects that belief.

This is not a token gesture. It is a serious, upgraded offer designed to match his status at the heart of Pep Guardiola’s era and whatever comes next.

Madrid noise and a firm response

Where there is a world-class midfielder approaching the final year of his deal, there is Real Madrid.

Presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme recently claimed that an agreement between Rodri and Madrid was already in place, a statement that sent predictable shockwaves through both clubs’ fanbases. Rodri moved quickly to shut that down, publicly dismissing the idea and repeating his stance: any decision on his future will wait until after the World Cup.

No hints. No winks. Just a clear message that nothing is done.

For City, that response matters almost as much as the negotiations themselves. It keeps the door firmly open at the Etihad and stops Madrid from dictating the narrative before a ball is kicked this summer.

Etihad power play

Inside City, there is no disguising the importance of this renewal.

Director of football Hugo Viana has placed Rodri’s long-term future near the top of his summer to-do list. Letting a 29-year-old cornerstone drift into the final 12 months of his contract would hand Madrid – and any other heavyweight watching closely – exactly the opportunity they crave.

Moretto’s update suggests City have acted to prevent that scenario. They have moved from intention to execution, putting forward a proposal serious enough to be described as bringing both sides within touching distance of an agreement.

No parades, no announcements. But crucially, no stalemate either.

The timing around the dugout adds another layer. City are preparing to usher in the Enzo Maresca era after the departure of Pep Guardiola. Securing Rodri would give the incoming manager a guaranteed anchor in midfield, a tactical constant amid change.

Decision time after the World Cup

For now, the ball sits at Rodri’s feet.

He has signalled that he will weigh up the offer with his family once the World Cup is over, with no rush to commit and no pressure – at least publicly – to decide before he is ready.

City have done what they can: a substantial proposal, a clear show of faith, and a determination not to be outmanoeuvred by Madrid or anyone else. The gap that once existed in negotiations appears to have narrowed.

The next move belongs to the man who controls City’s tempo on the pitch. Off it, his choice could define the shape of their midfield – and their ambitions – for years to come.
