When Is the Next International Break? Changes to September and October Dates for 2026

After the 2026 FIFA World Cup wrapped up, which saw an expanded format with 48 teams competing over six weeks, the usual international break schedule has shifted. Instead of separate breaks in September and October, these have been merged into a single extended window.

The next international break will start on September 21, 2026 and last until October 6, 2026. This longer period gives national teams up to four games within 16 days, offering more opportunities to work with players.

Why Combine September and October Breaks?

Traditionally, FIFA’s calendar had one-week international breaks in both September and October. With the longer World Cup in 2026, FIFA opted to merge these two into a bigger block. This allows players extra time to recover and reintegrate with their clubs before returning to their national teams.

Coaches will likely appreciate this stretch as it provides more time to develop team strategies and build cohesion, something rare in international football.

What About November?

The regular international break remains in place from November 9 to November 17, 2026. During this time, national squads will gather worldwide for up to two matches.
