Rodri's Tailored Training Plan at Barcelona as Cancelo Joins Full Session
Rodri’s first real day as a Barcelona player didn’t come with big crowds or group rondos. It came on a side pitch, away from the main group, following a plan drawn up just for him.
The World Cup winner, Barça’s headline summer signing, completed his first full training session at the club’s facilities on Friday, but under an individual programme. He had already taken part in the pre-match activation before the Joan Gamper Trophy, yet this was different: boots on, grass underfoot, but no integration into the collective drills just yet.
Fresh from his holidays and only a few days back into work, the 30-year-old midfielder is being handled carefully. His fitness is good, by his own account even excellent, but Barcelona want him to climb through the gears rather than slam straight into top speed.
At his presentation, Rodri made his own position crystal clear.
“I’m ready to play already. The back operation that was talked about was nothing, it was an outpatient procedure. I’m ready to train with the team and, when the coach decides, once I’ve got some rhythm, I’ll be ready to play. I hope it will be as soon as possible.”
The message was bold. The plan from the coaching staff is calmer.
Flick sticks to his line: no risks
After a rest day on Thursday, Barça were back at work to start preparing for Sunday’s La Liga opener away to Elche at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero. The session carried the usual intensity of a build-up to a first official match of the season. Rodri, though, did not match the workload of his new teammates.
He moved, he worked, but on his own schedule.
Even so, it is too early to cross his name off the list for Elche. Saturday’s final training session and Hansi Flick’s press conference will be decisive in gauging whether the midfielder can be involved and potentially make his Barça debut.
Flick has been consistent in recent weeks: he will not gamble on anyone’s health or rush a return. The priority, above all, is clear – every player must be given the time needed to reach full fitness. Rodri is no exception, regardless of his status or eagerness.
Cancelo back in the fold – but still waiting
While Rodri worked to one side, Joao Cancelo finally got what he has been waiting for: a normal session, with the group, in Barça colours.
The Portuguese full-back has endured several tense weeks as his return to Spotify Camp Nou dragged on. On Friday, the uncertainty gave way to routine. He trained at full tilt with the rest of the available first-team squad.
Whether that is enough to see him in the squad list for Elche is another matter. Flick can only use him if the club manage to register him in time, and for now none of Barça’s new signings have been registered. Even Andreas Christensen, who renewed his contract this summer, remains unregistered.
So Cancelo runs, presses and overlaps in training, but still waits for the green light from the offices.
He shared the pitch with a strong first-team group and a sizeable contingent of academy talent: Eder Aller, Xavi Espart, Jordi Pesquer, Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, Hamza Abdelkarim, Brian Farinas and Alvaro Cortes all joined the session, tasting the tempo of senior football.
On one side, Rodri building rhythm alone. On the other, Cancelo fully involved but not yet eligible. Between the training ground and the registration list, Flick’s first competitive XI of the season is taking shape – but a couple of big pieces are still waiting to fall into place.
