Roma's Rashford Talks Hit Reality Check with Kone Negotiations
The names involved are glamorous. The numbers are not.
In Italy, reports say Marcus Rashford has been floated in conversations between Roma and Manchester United during negotiations over Manu Kone. On paper, it sounds like the sort of blockbuster compromise that lights up a summer window. In practice, it already looks like a non-starter.
United cool on €60m Kone
Kone’s World Cup with France in 2026 has pushed him firmly into the Premier League’s eyeline, and United are among the clubs tracking the Roma midfielder. His performances in the tournament have strengthened Roma’s hand, but not enough to erase the financial realities in the capital.
Roma are still working under the shadow of FFP. The club know a major sale may be required, and Kone is one of the few assets capable of bringing in serious money. La Gazzetta dello Sport’s latest estimates put his potential fee at around €60m.
That figure, though, is exactly where United’s enthusiasm starts to fray. According to the same report, there is no unanimity inside the United hierarchy about committing that level of investment to Kone. Some like the player, fewer like the price. So the plan is clear: keep talking, keep pushing, and try to bring Roma’s demands down.
Rashford as a makeweight?
This is where Rashford’s name enters the room.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims United could explore including the England forward as part of the discussions, a high-profile makeweight to soften the financial blow of any Kone deal. It is the kind of idea that always appears when two big clubs circle the same negotiation table: a marquee swap, a reset for one player, a solution for another.
But the obstacles are immediate and stark.
Rashford’s contract at Old Trafford is heavy. Reports in Italy put his net salary at around €10m per season, with a further €2.5m in bonuses. Those numbers would not just stretch Roma’s wage structure; they would shatter it. He would become, by some distance, the highest-paid player in Serie A.
For a club still carefully managing their books, that is not a detail. It is the deal-breaker.
Loan dreams, hard numbers
Roma’s stance, as relayed in the Italian reports, underlines that gap between fantasy and feasibility. They would not be looking at a straight permanent transfer for Rashford. The only remotely plausible route would be an initial loan.
Even then, the equation is brutal. Roma would need United to continue paying a significant portion of Rashford’s salary to make the move remotely viable. For United, who would be parting with a high-earning, high-profile player, the idea of subsidising his wages heavily while he plays in Serie A hardly screams smart business.
So the proposal hangs there: attractive in theory, awkward in every practical sense.
Kone remains on United’s radar. Roma remain under pressure to balance their accounts. Rashford’s name has been mentioned. But unless someone blinks on the numbers, this is a transfer puzzle that looks destined to stay unsolved.
