Ron Jans Reflects on FC Utrecht's Struggles and Anthony Correia's Challenge
Ron Jans winces for Anthony Correia. You could see it on NOS Studio Sport, and you could hear it in his voice. FC Utrecht’s 1-6 collapse at home to PSV didn’t just sting in the city; it hurt a former coach who still feels a bond with the club.
“I have to say, it does hurt me,” Jans admitted. “Because I had a great time at FC Utrecht. So they have to stick together and fight.”
This isn’t sympathy from a distance. Jans knows exactly what it looks like when the ground seems to fall away beneath you in Utrecht. Last season he went nine league matches without a win. The tension, the cameras, the questions – he’s worn all of it.
So when he watches Correia and technical director Willem Janssen now, he recognises the faces.
“I see those images of Correia and of Willem Janssen. I saw that in myself in January as well,” he recalled. “That really wasn't good either, but then I thought: hello, if the leader looks like that...”
That realisation became a turning point. Jans took the footage of his own slumped shoulders and hollow stare into the dressing room.
“The next morning I showed those images to the group,” he said. His message was blunt. This is how it feels, this is how it looks, and this is where it has to change.
He told his players: “Listen, that is how it is at that moment, but we are sticking together now and we are going to fight. We will come through it.”
Utrecht did climb out of their slump. That memory shapes his message to Correia now. The results are brutal, the table is unforgiving, but the response has to come from inside the dressing room.
“You can see that now as well. Then it just has to happen in the next match,” Jans urged, pushing the current coach to stay positive and keep the squad united.
The numbers are stark. Utrecht sit second from bottom in the Eredivisie, with just one point from their first four matches. The mood is fragile, the margin for error shrinking.
Next week, in their own stadium, they face Go Ahead Eagles.
For Correia, it already feels like one of those games that can bend a season.
