Roony Bardghji's ACL Injury Disrupts Barcelona Summer Plans

Barcelona’s summer plans have been ripped up by a moment on the training pitch that changes everything for Roony Bardghji.

The club confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that will require surgery in the coming days and rule him out for months. Any prospect of a move before the transfer window closes on September 1 has vanished in an instant.

A move lined up, then disaster

This was supposed to be the summer Bardghji stepped out of the shadows. After talks with Barcelona’s hierarchy, the Sweden international had been preparing for a transfer, with interest coming from across Europe and concrete enquiries from the Premier League. Negotiations were expected to accelerate this week.

Then came Monday’s training session.

In a cruel twist, the winger went down with what medical tests later confirmed as a severe ACL tear in the same right knee he injured in 2024 while at Copenhagen. The diagnosis not only ends his hopes of leaving, it resets an already difficult career path.

The timing could hardly be harsher. Just days earlier, coach Hansi Flick had been transparent with Bardghji, telling him first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find this season. With Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi arriving to bolster the attack, the young Swede was staring at an even more crowded depth chart.

The logical solution was a move. The market was open, the interest was real, and the player was ready.

Protected from risk, hurt anyway

Barcelona had tried to shield him from exactly this scenario. Bardghji was deliberately left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a precaution to avoid injury while transfer talks simmered in the background.

The irony will sting. He skipped the matches to stay safe, only to suffer the worst possible injury in training two days later.

For the club, it is a sporting and financial setback. For the player, it is something far more personal: a second ACL tear in the same knee before his 21st birthday, just as he stood on the edge of a fresh start.

A career stalled, again

Bardghji arrived at Barcelona last summer from Copenhagen in a deal worth around €2 million, a low-cost, high-upside bet on one of Scandinavia’s brightest young attackers. He featured 28 times across all competitions in his debut season, scoring twice, but most of those minutes came from the bench.

This season was never going to be straightforward. Gordon and Adeyemi’s arrivals pushed him further down Flick’s attacking options. The club’s message was clear: seek a move, play regularly, develop elsewhere.

Now that plan has disintegrated. With the window closing on September 1, no club is going to commit to a major deal for a player facing a long rehabilitation from a second ACL rupture. Barcelona know it. Bardghji knows it.

Long road back in Barcelona

The winger will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy recovery programme at the club’s facilities. Any talk of his future is on hold; the only focus now is getting that right knee back to full strength.

Instead of chasing a new chapter in England or elsewhere in Europe, Bardghji will spend the upcoming campaign in Barcelona’s treatment rooms and gym, working through the lonely, repetitive grind of rehab for the second time in as many years.

For a 20-year-old who came to Spain to break through on the big stage, it is a brutal pause. The question now is not where he plays next, but how strongly he can come back from another major knee injury in a career that has barely begun.
