Roony Bardghji Suffers ACL Tear: Transfer Hopes Dashed

Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji has suffered a devastating ACL tear in his right knee, a brutal blow that kills off any prospect of a transfer before the summer window shuts on September 1.

The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old Swede picked up the injury in training on Monday. Subsequent medical tests revealed a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, with surgery scheduled in the coming days and a long spell out of action now inevitable.

A move lined up, then everything collapses

The timing could hardly be worse. Bardghji had been working towards a move away from Barcelona after clear talks with the club hierarchy and coach Hansi Flick. He knew minutes would be scarce. He was preparing to leave.

Just days before the injury, Flick had told him directly that breaking into the first team this season would be extremely difficult, according to ESPN. It was blunt, honest, and it set the course for his summer: find a new club, find a new start.

Barcelona, aware of both the player’s ambitions and his market value, had already begun fielding enquiries from across Europe. Premier League sides were among those monitoring the situation, and negotiations were expected to ramp up as the window ticked towards its final weeks.

To reduce the risk of exactly this kind of scenario, the club had even taken a precaution. Bardghji was deliberately left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a protective move while talks and options developed.

Then came Monday’s training session. And with it, the worst possible outcome.

Second ACL tear, same knee

This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same serious injury while at Copenhagen in 2024. For any player, one ACL tear is a major hurdle. A second, in the same knee at just 20 years old, is a brutal test of body and mind.

Bardghji joined Barcelona last summer from Copenhagen in a deal worth around €2 million. His debut season in Spain brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals. On paper, a solid foundation. In reality, most of those minutes came from the bench, and the path to a starting role was already narrowing.

This summer’s arrivals only tightened the squeeze. With Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi coming in to bolster Barcelona’s forward line, Bardghji’s route to regular game time shrank even further. A transfer looked like the logical next step for everyone involved.

That door has now slammed shut.

Season on hold

With the window closing on September 1, there will be no move. No late scramble, no new league, no fresh challenge. The ACL tear has frozen Bardghji’s future in place, at least for the coming season.

He will undergo surgery in the coming days and begin a lengthy rehabilitation programme in Barcelona. Instead of using this campaign to relaunch his career elsewhere, he will spend it in treatment rooms and on training pitches, working through the slow, unforgiving process of recovery.

For Barcelona, it means keeping a young talent they were ready to move on, now sidelined for months. For Bardghji, it means facing a second major knee reconstruction before his career has truly taken off.

The transfer market can wait. His battle now is with time, with rehab, and with the same right knee that has already betrayed him once.
