Rotherham United have moved to strengthen their back line with the signing of former Manchester United defender Sonny Aljofree on a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old, comfortable at both centre-back and right-back, joins after being released by the Premier League club in the summer, with the Millers inserting an option to extend his stay by a further year. Aljofree arrives with a pedigree that carries weight. He was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2021-22 season, a competition that has long been a proving ground for those on the brink of senior football. The defender has already taken the scenic route that many academy graduates now face. Loan spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County have given him a grounding in the realities of senior football: tighter pitches, heavier tackles, and the kind of pressure that comes when three points mean everything, every week.

Those experiences should serve him well in South Yorkshire. So too will his familiarity with his new surroundings. Aljofree has been on trial with Rotherham during pre-season, giving the coaching staff ample time to assess his temperament, versatility and fit within the dressing room before committing to a contract. This is not a blind punt on a big name from a big club; it is a decision made with eyes fully open.

There is also a family thread running through the move. Sonny is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, a player who built his career in the Football League with a reputation for resilience and reliability. The surname will be familiar to long-time followers of the lower divisions. Now it falls to the younger Aljofree to carve out his own story.

For Rotherham, this is another piece in a defensive jigsaw that must come together quickly. For Aljofree, it is something more stark: a first permanent platform in senior football, and a chance to show that a youth career at Manchester United can be the start of something, not the highlight.
