Ruggeri Joins Aston Villa: A New Adventure in the Premier League

Aston Villa’s new left-back, Ruggeri, spoke of pride and impatience in equal measure as he completed his move from Atletico Madrid and stepped into the glare of the Premier League.

The 24-year-old arrives with serious mileage already on the clock. Signed by Atletico only last season on a five-year deal, he racked up 47 appearances in all competitions and laid on seven assists before Villa’s project – and Unai Emery’s pull – persuaded him to switch again this summer.

His rise has been sharp. Ruggeri came through Atalanta’s system, accelerated into their first team, then into Europe’s elite competitions. Now, Villa Park is the next stage.

“I am very happy to be here,” he told the club’s media. “It’s very exciting for me to be part of this club; I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and start this adventure. I was really enchanted by the project of the team, I know it’s a huge league with big expectations, and looking at recent results, I had no doubts about saying yes and being part of this club.”

A defender built for Emery’s demands

Ruggeri does not arrive as a prospect to be hidden away. He comes with Champions League scars and know-how.

Across spells with Atalanta and Atletico Madrid, the Italian has made 23 Champions League appearances, contributing three assists. He has operated both as a conventional left-back and as a wing-back in a five-man midfield, a blend of roles that fits neatly with Emery’s tactical switches and high-intensity blueprint.

He has already studied that blueprint from afar.

“I’ve definitely watched lots of Aston Villa games, and was really impressed by the intensity that the coach wants, the quality of the football he demands, and this is why I had no doubts about coming here to begin defending these club colours,” he said. “Last season was important for me, and I hope to do just as well with Aston Villa, and then win a trophy with this club.”

European pedigree, international ambition

Ruggeri’s club résumé is strong for a player still waiting on his first senior Italy cap.

He lifted the 2023-24 Europa League with Atalanta and then reached the Copa del Rey final with Atletico Madrid last season, a run that underlined his ability to handle pressure nights and hostile atmospheres. Multiple call-ups to the Azzurri squad have followed, but the debut remains elusive.

The move to England is not just about club glory. It is also a calculated step to push himself into the heart of the national-team conversation, to make it impossible for Italy’s coaches to overlook him once more.

His inspirations are rooted in Italian greatness. “As a child I really liked Paolo Maldini as a left-back, but over the years I didn’t have a specific player to model myself on. He was the one I looked up to when I was a kid,” he admitted.

Eyes on Villa Park and a fast start

The schedule will not wait for him to settle.

Ruggeri could feature as early as this weekend, when Villa face Brighton and Hove Albion, before a heavyweight meeting with Arsenal looms on the horizon. If Emery wants his new signing to learn quickly, the fixture list is doing its part.

The defender has already thrown himself into understanding his new home, poring over footage and images of Villa Park and the club’s fanbase.

“I saw many videos and photos of the stadium, and I can’t wait to play there, because I saw the fans are incredible. I can’t wait to get to know the atmosphere,” he said.

Villa, buoyed by recent European success and steady domestic progress, have built a squad that expects to compete, not just participate. Into that confident dressing room walks Ruggeri, a Europa League winner with a point still to prove.

The stage is set. Now it is down to him to turn promise, and pride, into Premier League presence.
