Sam Szmodics Returns to Derby County for Long-Term Deal
Derby County have brought Sam Szmodics back to Pride Park – and this time, it is about much more than a short-term fix.
The 30-year-old forward has rejoined the Rams from Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, but the small print tells the real story: Derby are committed to buying the Republic of Ireland international at the end of the 2026-27 campaign. The obligation to buy is appearance-based, with the fee understood to be in the region of £2.7m.
This is not a speculative gamble. It is a manager backing a player he knows can transform a season.
Eustace reunites with his talisman
John Eustace has seen the best version of Szmodics before. Under his guidance at Blackburn Rovers, Szmodics lit up the Championship in 2023-24, finishing as the division’s leading scorer with 27 goals. That ruthless campaign did not just drag Blackburn through games; it altered the way clubs viewed him.
Ipswich Town were convinced enough to pay £9m to take him to Portman Road in the summer of 2024, as they prepared for their first Premier League season in more than 20 years. It was a statement signing for a club stepping back into the top flight.
The leap, though, did not bring the fairytale. Szmodics scored four Premier League goals as the Tractor Boys went straight back down after a single season. The hangover lingered. Last term he struck only once in 18 Ipswich appearances before Derby moved in and took him on loan.
At Pride Park, the spark began to return. Szmodics featured 13 times and scored three goals as Derby pushed for the play-offs, only to fall four points short of the Championship’s top six. It was a glimpse, not the full show.
Now Derby are paying to see the whole thing.
“It was always going to be here”
Szmodics has made no secret of how quickly he settled in the East Midlands.
“After being here for a couple of months, I knew what the squad and the club were all about - if I had anywhere to come back to, it was always going to be here,” he told the club’s website.
That is not the language of a player hedging his bets. It is a forward committing the peak years of his career to a club that believes it can grow with him.
His target is blunt, and Derby’s is the same.
“Hopefully, we will go one step further than we did last year and get promoted to the Premier League,” he said.
The numbers behind the deal underline that ambition. An obligation to buy tied to appearances signals Derby expect him to be central, not rotational. A fee in the multi-million bracket, for a club still rebuilding, underlines how much faith they are placing in his partnership with Eustace.
If Szmodics can get anywhere near the form he showed at Blackburn, Derby will have one of the Championship’s most dangerous forwards on their books long-term. If he does not, the financial commitment will be a heavy one. The club is betting that familiarity with Eustace’s demands, and a system tailored to his strengths, will tilt that equation firmly in their favour.
One in, one almost out
While Szmodics comes in with a view to the future, another Derby story looks close to its end.
Midfielder Liam Thompson is on the verge of leaving for Mansfield Town. The 24-year-old, who first broke into the Derby first team in 2021 after six years in the academy, has just one year left on his current deal.
His departure would mark the exit of a homegrown player who climbed all the way through the club’s ranks but never quite nailed down a permanent starting role in a side constantly reshaped by financial strain, managerial changes and shifting league status.
For Derby, it is another sign of a squad evolving under Eustace: academy graduates moving on, experienced Championship operators coming in, and a manager doubling down on a player he once helped turn into the most prolific striker in the division.
The question now is simple. With Szmodics back in his corner, can Eustace finally turn Derby’s near-miss into a promotion that sticks?
