SC Cambuur Fans Injured by Fireworks During Eredivisie Match

SC Cambuur say fans suffered burns, hearing damage and eye injuries after Feyenoord supporters hurled fireworks into home sections during Sunday’s Eredivisie match.

The game at the Kooi Stadion was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a large group of Feyenoord fans in the away end lit a bank of red flares and began throwing fireworks. Several were launched in the direction of Cambuur supporters.

In a statement, Cambuur confirmed five home fans had been injured and detailed the nature of the damage, describing burns, hearing problems and eye injuries.

“It should be clear that setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever,” the club said, condemning the scenes on their home turf.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from the behaviour. The Rotterdam club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and confirmed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who worked as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season, had personally apologised to SC Cambuur after the final whistle.

The pressure is now on to identify those responsible. Cambuur, promoted back to the Eredivisie last season after three years in the second tier, said they will cooperate with authorities to ensure sanctions follow, while Feyenoord announced they will request and review camera footage from the stadium.

The next step is clear: the images will tell the story of who turned a league match into a safety investigation.
