Scott McTominay’s Heart Surgery Declared a Complete Success
Scott McTominay’s heart surgery has been hailed “a complete success” by Napoli, with the club expecting the Scotland midfielder back in training before the end of the month.
The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure on Tuesday morning at Spire Manchester Hospital, a minimally invasive operation used to correct irregular heart rhythms. The issue was picked up after Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August, when McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes and subsequent checks revealed a mild benign arrhythmia.
The diagnosis prompted swift action. Napoli confirmed that McTominay will rest for two weeks before rejoining full training, keeping him broadly on course with the club’s initial hope that he would return to action after the international break in early October.
McTominay himself moved quickly to reassure supporters. When news of his heart problem first emerged, he posted a short, defiant message on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”
The timing of his recovery will be watched closely in Scotland as well as in Naples. New Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli is preparing for his first four games in charge – home and away against Slovenia, plus Nations League fixtures with North Macedonia and Switzerland – scheduled for the end of September and early October. McTominay’s availability for that run now hinges on how he responds once he returns to training.
According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. For McTominay, the problem has been identified, treated and, Napoli insist, successfully corrected. Now the countdown begins to his return to the pitch.
